Description

The Khrizantema or Khrizantema-S BMP-3 (Russian name 9P157-2) is a self-propelled anti-tank missile armored vehicle developed under the leadership of the Russian Company KBM Engineering Design Bureau in Moscow and was unveiled for the first time in 1996. The KBM Khrizantema BMP-3 tank destroyer was first seen in public during an air show in Moscow in late 1999 and at that time it remained at the prototype stage. Russia refers to the system as the Khrizantema-S. The modified BMP-3 Khrizantema carrier vehicle only needs a crew of 2-man with 2 Khrizantema missiles ready to fire. Reloading operations can be done automatically under armor protection. In mid-2003 it was stated that series production of this system was underway and that it would be issued to motor rifle regiments, marines, special reconnaissance, and special sub-units. The BMP-3 Khrizantema-S system is designed to engage existing and future tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, lightly armored targets, engineer structures, fire emplacements, boats, low-flying low-speed aircraft, and manpower in shelters and on open terrain in any weather, by day and night, at battlefield obscurants.

Technical Data

Armament
The turret of the self-propelled anti-tank missile system Khrizantema-S BMP-3 IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) is removed as well as the two 7.62 mm PKT bow-mounted forward-firing machine guns, firing ports, and associated vision devices, troop compartment roof hatches and rear doors. The hull roof has been modified and, mounted on the hull roof, between the second and third road wheels, is an elevated arm that carries two Khrizantema (NATO code AT-15) anti-tank guided missile systems in the ready-to-launch position. Missiles are re-loaded automatically by the tank destroyer from an internal magazine with 15 rounds and can also accept munitions manually loaded from outside the vehicle. The manufacturer claims that three 9P157-2 tank destroyers are able to engage 14 attacking tanks and destroy at least sixty percent of the attacking force. The dual guidance system ensures protection against electronic countermeasures and operation in all climatic conditions, day or night. The launcher has a powered traverse through 170º and powered elevation/depression. Khrizantema missile is able to destroy MBTs and other armored targets at long range, although the manufacturer also states that it can be used to destroy fortified structures, pillboxes, and small ships. Given its high speed, it can also engage slow and low-flying helicopters.
The Khrizantema 9M123 is a Russian anti-tank missile. The 9M123 (NATO code AT-15 Springer) missile itself is supersonic, flying at an average speed of 400 m/s or Mach 1.2 and a range of between 400 and 6000 meters. Propulsion is by way of a single solid-fuel rocket motor with two exhausts on either side of the missile. It can also fire the 9M132F missile.
Design and protection
The hull of the BMP-3 Khrizantema-S is of all-welded aluminum armor construction providing the crew with protection from small arms fire and shell splinters. The glacis plate is well-sloped and the hull sides are vertical. The hull floor consists of two layers with a space between them and, over the frontal arc of the turret; spaced armor is fitted as standard. The BMP-3 Khrizantema has a two-man crew consisting of commander/gunner and driver, both under full armor protection. They are seated at the front of the vehicle with the driver in the center.
Mobility
The BMP-3 Khrizantema-S uses the same chassis and power pack as the infantry fighting vehicle version of the basic BMP-3 IFV. The engine is located low down at the very rear of the hull with the hydro-mechanical transmission. The BMP-3 Khrizantema is powered by a UTD-29M 10-cylinder 4-stroke liquid-cooled diesel engine developing 500 hp coupled to a hydro-mechanical transmission with 4 forward and 2 reverse gears. The suspension on either side consists of six dual rubber-tired road wheels with the idler at the front, drive sprocket at the rear, and three track-return rollers. The road wheels have individual hydropneumatic suspension, which consists of a spring, shock absorber and an elevation device that allows the ground clearance to be adjusted from 190 mm to 510 mm. An external shock absorber is attached to the first, second, and sixth road wheel stations. The electromechanical track adjustment system allows the driver to adjust the track tension for both tracks without leaving his seat. The air inlet/outlets are located on the right side of the hull roof with the rectangular exhaust outlet located on the right side of the hull just above the track guard.
Accessories
The BMP-3 Khrizantema-S is equipped with a CBRN (Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) protection system for the crew (gunner and driver) in addition to full armor protection equivalent to the standard BMP-3 chassis and entrenching equipment. The vehicle retains the full amphibious capability of the standard BMP-3 armored infantry fighting vehicle, being propelled in the water at a speed of 10 km/h by two water jets mounted at the rear of the hull. A radar control system and an optical and laser control system are mounted on the left of the missile launcher unit.
