Description

One of the main components of the Korkut self-propelled air defense is the 35mm twin-cannon Gun System mounted on an ACV-30 tracked armoured vehicle chassis. The vehicle was unveiled in May 2013 during the Defense Exhibition IDEF in Istanbul, Turkey. The Korkut 35mm gun system is designed and developed by the Turkish Company Aselsan which has provided all the firing control system including radar, target acquisition system, air picture screen, fire control program and Identification of Friend or Foe with IFF System..The vehicle is based on a tracked chassis of ACV-30 armoured vehicle manufactured by the Turkish Company FNSS. It is armed with 35mm twin-cannon manufactured by the Turkish Company MKEK. In the context of the development phase of the KORKUT Project, the contract for the development of tracked carrying platform was signed between ASELSAN and FNSS on June 25, 2011. Tests and development of the Korkut 35mm gun system were successfully completed, with final acceptance occurring October 31, 2016, with the first production of the vehicle in October 2016. In March 2017, the Turkish Army has signed a contract with the Company Aselsan of Turkey for the purchase of an undisclosed number of new Korkut 35mm short-range air defense system. According to an Internet source, Turkish army plans to order 42 35mm Gun Systems with first delivery in 2018.

Armament

The Korkut gun system is fitted with an unmanned turret armed with a 35mm twin-cannon able to fire standard and Air Burst Ammunition. The 35mm cannons are Oerlikon GDF-002 produced under license in Turkey by the Company MKEK. The turret is fully stabilized which allows target tracking and firing on the move. The concept of air burst ammunition came up in order to increase the efficiency of the gun systems against air-to-surface missiles, UAV’s, etc. The idea is basically to create a cloud of particles that have high kinetic energy and penetration capability on the path of the threat and be able to hit targets that are very difficult to hit with the classical ammunitions. The 35 mm cannons have a rate of fire of 1,100 rounds, per barrel, per minute with a maximum range of 4 km. The turret is fitted with an automatic linkless ammunition feed mechanism which brings the unique capability of loading two different types of ammunition at the same time into the magazine and makes it possible to change the type of ammunition to be fired within less than 15 seconds. To increase the self-protection of the vehicle, there is four smoke grenade dischargers on each side at the front of the turret.

Design and protection

The Korkut 35mm twin-cannon Gun System is based on the FNSS armoured vehicle ACV-30 tracked chassis. The vehicle has a crew of three including a gunner, commander and driver who are seated in the chassis of the vehicle. The driver is seated at the front left of the hull with power pack to the right. The crew members enter and leave the vehicle through a large hydraulically operated ramp at the rear of the hull, which has an integral door in the left side. The 35mm unmanned turret is mounted in the center roof of the vehicle with a tracking radar at the rear part of the roof. The ACV-30 platform chassis is provided with a unique, space laminated armour system combining steel and aluminum technology for protection against firing of small arms 14.5×114mm AP Armour-Piercing (STANAG 4569 Level 4) and mine blast 6kg of TNT explosion under tracks (STANAG 4569 Level 2).

A tracking radar is mounted on the top of the turret.

Mobility

The Korkut 35mm twin-cannon Gun System uses the same powerpack and suspension components as the ACV-30 light armoured vehicle. It is motorized with a Diesel engine coupled to a fully automatic transmission. The torsion bar suspension on each side consists of six road wheels with the drive sprocket at the front and idler at the rear. The upper part of the suspension is covered by a skirt. The 35 Gun System can run at a maximum road speed of 65 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km. It can cross a trench of 2m width and a vertical obstacle of 0.8m. The vehicle is also able to negotiate a gradient of 60% and side slopes of 30%.

Accessories

The Korkut 35mm twin-cannon Gun System is equipped with an automatic target tracking system with an integrated tracking platform including tracking radar and Electro-Optic sensors. The links between 35 cannon vehicles and the command and control vehicle are provided by a VHF wide-band radio. Standard equipment also includes CBRN protection system, air conditioning, heating system, and automatic fire suppression for the engine and crew compartment. The vehicle is fully amphibious and propelled in the water at a maximum speed of 6 km/h thanks to two water jets mounted at the rear of the chassis.
