Like other countries, Italy focuses to the delivery of mobile artillery systems such as Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States. Italy has not yet made a decision on the type of artillery system that could be delivered to Ukraine, and there are two possible options, the M109L which is an Italian version of the American M109 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzer or the PzH 2000, which is the latest generation of 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzer which is in service Croatia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Netherlands, and Qatar.

On April 20, 2022, Army Recognition reported that the Netherlands would have sent PzH 2000 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzers to Ukraine and Germany will provide Ukraine with ammunition and training for these artillery systems.

The M109L is an Italian-made development of the American M109 155mm tracked self-propelled howitzer. The first batch of 32 155 mm M109Ls was completed in 1986 and final deliveries were made in 1992.

The M109L was upgraded with a 39 caliber long-barrel version to replace the original 23 caliber barrel of the American M109. The new cannon is able to fire FH-70 projectiles to a maximum range of 24,000 m. The M109L can also fire assisted ammunition at a maximum range of 30 km.
