Description
The Marder 1A2 is a German-made Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle (AIFV) developed and designed by the Company Rheinmetall Land System. This is the second generation vehicle of Marder 1 family. Between 1984 and 1991, all German Marder 1's were upgraded to A2 standard. A total of 674 Marder 1A1 were upgraded to A2 standard.
 
Main Variants
- Marder 1A: upgrade variant of basic Marder 1. Main improvements are: better firepower due to double belt feed for the 20 mm cannon; improved night capabilities with the installation of a PERI-Z59 (WOE) night sight with sight head PERI-Z16 which uses the image intensification technique, with thermal pointer.
- Marder 1A1: now carry a 2,000 m range Euromissile MILAN ATGW system with five missiles and this has meant that the number of infantrymen carried has been reduced from six to five.
- Marder 1A2: Since 1983, all the German Marder 1s have been upgraded to the A2 standard. Fitted with thermal imaging sight equipment instead of the image intensifier. New sighting system.
- Marder 1A3: new armour kit mounted on the side of the hull. . New stowage boxes are provided along the sides of the upper part of the hull and a new radio installation is provided.
- Marder 1A5: Upgrade of Marder 1A3 with heavy anti-tank mine protection kit. The Marder 1A5 has an integrated mine-protection system under the crew compartment for enhanced protection against heavy anti-tank mines. New blast mine seat for the crew.

Armament
The armamement of the Marder 1A2 is the same as the Marder 1A1 and consists of one 20 mm Rheinmetall MK 20 Rh 202 cannon which is mounted externally and has an elevation of +65º, depression of -17º and 360º turret traverse. A 7.62mm coaxial machine gun is mounted to the right of the main armament. Two banks of three smoke grenade dischargers are mounted to the left of the main armament. An anti-tank missile launcher firing post MILAN can be mounted to the right side of the turret. The firing post consists of a sighting system and a guidance assembly mounted on a tripod. The transmission of guidance data of the missile is by wire. The Milan missile has a maximum range of 2,000 meters.
Design and protection
The layout of the vehicle is the same as the Marder 1A1 with the driver position at the front of the hull on the left side and has a single-piece hatch cover that opens to the right. The hull and the turret of the Marder 1A2 are made in all welded steel which provide protection against firing of small-arms fire and shell splinters with the front of the hull providing protection from up to 20 millimeters APDS (Armour-Piercing Discarding Sabot) rounds.
Propulsion
The Marder 1A2 is motorized with an MTU MB Ea-500 six-cylinder liquid cooled diesel engine which develops 600 hp. at 2,200 rpm. The vehicle can run at a maximum speed of 75 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km. The Marder 1A2 is equipped with a new suspension. The torsion bar suspension each side consists of six dual rubber-tyred roadwheels with the drive sprocket at the front, the idler at the rear and three track-return rollers. The first, second, fifth and sixth roadwheel stations have a hydraulic shock-absorber. The Marder 1A2 can climb vertical obstacles up to 1m, a side slopes of 30% and cross a trench of maximum 2.5 m.
Accessories
Compared to the first generation of Marder 1, the Marder 1A2 is fitted with thermal imaging sight equipment in place of image intensifier. The infra-red searchlight on the left side of the turret is removed. The Marder 1A2 can ford to a depth of 1.5 m without preparation or to 2.5 m with the aid of a kit.
