The U.S. Army has awarded a $335 million Section 804 Middle Tier Acquisition (MTA) Rapid Prototyping contract to General Dynamics Land Systems to deliver 12 prototype vehicles for the Mobile Protected Firepower program. The Griffin III demonstrator was dispayed at AUSA 2018 as a solution for the MPF programme.

Combined Resolve XI, a biannual exercise that focuses on improving the readiness and lethality of participating units, has wrapped up its first two-week phase, which began on Nov. 26 at the Joint Multinational Training Center in Hohenfels, Germany. Rheinmetall is modernizing the Bundeswehr’s fleet of Bergepanzer 3 armoured recovery vehicles, the BPz3. The move is in response to altered operational requirements. A contract to this effect has now been signed at the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-service Support (BAAINBw). From 2019 to 2024, 69 of Germany’s BPz3 vehicles will be fitted with battlefield recovery equipment and universal transport platforms. The order is worth around €30 million, including value added tax.

Flight tests of the most advanced Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) will begin in "the nearest perspective," Strategic Missile Force Commander Colonel-General Sergei Karakayev said in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper. According to Karakayev, the necessary infrastructure for the flight tests of Sarmat ICBM is being constructed at the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in north Russia. "Flight tests of the complex will start in the nearest perspective and its success will provide for the serial production of its components," he said.

On Monday, December 17th, 2018, the 500th VT4 vehicle has been delivered to the French Army. Thanks to this delivery, the delivery targets – 500 Standard 1 vehicles - are met for 2018. Designed for liaison and command, the VT4 is a light vehicle which is being delivered to the French Army since October 1st.

On 14 December 2018, Spain’s Socialist government gave the green light for a 7.3-billion-euro renewal of military equipment which it portrayed as “social spending” that will create thousands of jobs, several media report. According to NATO, Spain is estimated to have used 0.93 percent of its GDP for military spending in 2018. In January 2018, when the conservatives were in power, Spain had announced it intended to increase by 73 % its military spending over seven years.

Rheinmetall has just handed over a heavily protected Survivor R special operations vehicle to the police in the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Herbert Reul, minister of the interior of Nordrhein-Westfalen, symbolically presented the keys to the police SWAT unit in Essen. This versatile vehicle, ordered in spring 2018, is specially configured to meet the needs of tactical law enforcement in extreme situations. Three German states – Berlin, Saxony and Nordrhein-Westfalen – now equip their police special operators with the Survivor R.

The first prototype of Russia’s Tigr-2 next-generation armored vehicle being developed by VPK will be ready in March-April 2019 after some adjustments ordered by the Defense Ministry, a source in the ministry told TASS on Friday. "Some requirements for the vehicle have changed and the developer has had to make some adjustments in the design. This has had its effect on the timeframe but not very much. In April, perhaps, in March next year," the source said, without specifying the requirements.

Russian law enforcement units will receive ShAK-12 assault rifles, Yury Amelin, the representative of the Russian TsKIB SOO small arms design bureau which is part of the Rostec state defense contractor. "The deliveries to the law enforcement are underway. ShAK is rather peculiar equipment, it is not designed for mass use even inside special ops units. We receive orders, we implement them under the state defence procurement program but [the assault rifles] were not intended to be manufactured in large volumes," Amelin said.

Chinese-made CS/SH1 122mm 6x6 self-propelled howitzer is now in service with the Rwandan armed forces. December 11, 2018, a picture was released on the Flickr account of Rwanda President Paul Kagame press services showing the CS/SH1 122mm howitzer used by the Rwandan armed forces during a live firing military exercise held at the Gabiro Combat Training Centre in northeast Rwanda.

U.S. Army relaunches the study for a new APS (Active Protection System) for its Bradley tracked armored IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle). On December 11, 2018, the U.S. Government Contracts website issued a draft request from Department of the U.S. Army for proposal to collect information from industry to determine current market manufacturing capability to produce a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 APS for the Bradley IFV.

In the beginning of December 2018, Germany has formed its first new tank battalion during an official ceremony at the Munster army training ground in Lüneburg Heath that was attended by the German defence minister, Ursula von der Leyen. With this new tank battalion, Germany increases its military power of its armed forces to meet its NATO commitments.

Four Milrem Robotics' and QinetiQ Titan unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) were put through three weeks of rigorous tests by British troops during the Army Warfighting Experiment 2018 (AWE18) - Autonomous Warrior (Land). With four vehicles, Milrem Robotics was the most represented UGV manufacturer in the exercise.

Endeavor Robotics has revealed design details and images of its closely guarded Scorpion robot, developed for the U.S. Army’s Common Robotic System-Individual (CRS-I) program.
Announced in April, Endeavor is one of two finalists now in a run-off to provide the Army with a new multi-mission, ‘back-packable’ UGV weighing less than 25 lbs. Potentially worth more than $400 million, the contract to build up to 3,000 robots is scheduled to be awarded early next year.

Palomar Display Products, Inc. announced today that it has been awarded two contracts totaling $1.3M to deliver military display systems for the US Army armored vehicles. The orders include Next Generation Image Control Units (NGICU) digital color optically coupled display systems and spare parts. These displays have been designed, tested and qualified by Palomar Display Products, Inc. to operate in the harshest mobile environments worldwide. All deliveries under this contract will take place through 2019.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko met on Thursday (13 December 2018) to discuss developments in and around the Sea of Azov and the Alliance’s strong support for Ukraine. Mr. Stoltenberg reaffirmed NATO’s full support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, noting that NATO has stepped up its presence in the Black Sea region over the past few years and will continue to assess its posture.
