"Simultaneously with the withdrawal of the Voevoda complex from the Strategic Missile Forces it is planned to put on combat duty the strategic Sarmat stationary silo-based complex with liquid-fuel heavy missile. The preliminary operational time is 2019-2020," he said in answer to a question when Sarmat can replace Voevoda.

The reliability of the Voevoda complex remains stable after 28 years of operation. "The adopted decisions will keep Voevoda in the Russian Strategic Missile Forces up to 2022 including," Karakaev said.

It was reported that Sarmat had to become operational in 2018. It is a heavy intercontinental ballistic missile with a payload of up to 10 tons against 8.75 tons of its predecessor. The new missile is to replace R-36M2 Voevoda which, according to open sources, has been in service since 1988.
