Russia and Uzbekistan have signed military cooperation treaty for 2017.
The Russian and Uzbek defense ministers, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu and Colonel General Kabul Berdiyev, have signed the military-technical cooperation treaty and 2017 bilateral cooperation plan.

A the same time, The Russian and Uzbek Defense Ministries have planned 36 combined exercises in 2017, Uzbek Defense Minister Colonel General Kabul Berdiyev said at a meeting with his Russian counterpart, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu.

"The signing of the documents today will enable us to quickly equip the armed forces of your country and increase their combat readiness. We are paying close attention to the more active cooperation of the two defense ministries and to giving it a more practical focus," the Russian defense minister said.

According to him, this applies to the cooperative efforts to ensure Russia’s and Uzbekistan’s military security, strengthening of the combat capabilities of their armed services, training of military personnel, and military-technical cooperation in the first place.

"Today, threats and challenges in the Central Asian region necessitate the pooling of the efforts to negate them. It is important to prevent the arrival of militants of the [Russia-banned] Islamic State and other terrorist groups in our countries," Shoigu stressed.

In addition, he said, the program on modernizing the Uzbek Armed Forces and equipping them with up-to-date Russian materiel by 2020 was under way.

Russia is a major supplier of military equipment to Uzbekistan.
