Description
The AN/MPQ-53 is the search and detection, target track and illumination radar and missile commander for the surface-to-air defense missile system Patriot MIM-104. The AN/MPQ-53/65 Radar Set is a passive electronically scanned array radar equipped with IFF, electronic counter-countermeasure (ECCM), and track-via-missile (TVM) guidance subsystems. The AN/MPQ-53 G-band frequency-agile phased-array radar is automatically controlled from the ECS by the digital weapons control computer.

Description
The Radar Set consists of a multifunctional phased array radar mounted on an M860 semi-trailer towed by a M983, heavy expanded mobility tactical truck HEMTT. The Radar antenna is positioned at the forward end of the shelter and is erected to a fixed 67.5° angle relative to the horizontal plane during emplacement. Integral leveling equipment on the M860 semi-trailer permits emplacement on slopes of up to 10 degrees.
Operation
The radar's antenna array consists of over 5,000 elements that "flash" the radar's beam many times per second. Additionally, the radar's antenna array contains an IFF interrogator subsystem, a TVM array, and at least one "sidelobe canceller" (SLC), which is a small array designed to decrease interference that might affect the radar. Patriot's radar is somewhat unique in that it is a "detection-to-kill" system, meaning that a single unit performs all search, identification, track, and engagement functions. This is in contrast to most SAM systems, where several different radars are necessary to perform all functions necessary to detect and engage targets. The AN/MPQ-53/65 Radar is monitored and controlled by the ECS via the radar weapon control interface unit. The radar AN/MPQ-53/65 performs very low to very high altitude surveillance, target detection, target classification, target identification, target track, missile track, missile guidance, and ECCM functions.
Truck tractor
The AN/MPQ-53 Radar is mounted at the rear of the M860 semi-trailer. The M860 trailer is a two-axle trailerwith turntable steering on which the turntable steering has an automatic locking feature to aid in reversing operations. The AN/MPQ-53 Radar Set with its semi-trailer M860 is towed by an M983 10-ton tractor and can be emplaced on a 10-degree slope. The M983 truck uses an 8x8 chassis and is powered by a Detroit Diesel, MUI, 8V-92TA, V-8 2-stroke litre diesel developing 445 hp at 2,100 rpm.
Combat use
The AN/MPQ-53 Radar Set equips PAC-2 units, while the AN/MPQ-65 Radar Set equips PAC-3 units. The main difference between these two radars is the addition of a second traveling wave tube (TWT), which gives the -65 radar increased search, detection, and tracking capability. At any one time the radar AN/MPQ-53 is able to handle between 100 target tracks and support up to nine missiles in their final moments of engagement using TVM terminal homing. This technique involves the missile's passive monopulse seeker array being directed by the ECS to look in the direction of the target which then begins to intercept increasingly precise returns from the reflected electromagnetic energy signals. Radar interrogation of a target is carried out by an AN/TPX-46 (V) 7 IFF system using a linear antenna array set below the main array position.
