Germany has donated 25 Marder 1A3 IFV Infantry Fighting Vehicles to Jordan Armed Forces.
According a statement released to the Jordan armed Forces website, Germany has donated a first batch of 16 Marder 1A3 to the Jordanian army. A total of 25 vehicles will be delivered. The Marder 1A3 is an Infantry Fighting Vehicle (IFV) manufactured in Germany by Rheinmetall Landsysteme.

A picture was released on the official website of the Jordan Armed Forces showing three Marder 1A3 during the official handed over ceremony in Jordan, Sunday December 11, 2016. The ceremony was attended by the German Defence Minister Ursula von der Leyen and military delegations of the Jordanian armed forces.
 

The Marder 1A3 is an upgraded version of the previous version of the Marder manufactured by the German Company Rheinmetall Defense. The first Marder was handed by the German Army in may 1971.

The upgrade contract of the Marder 1 was awarded by Thyssen Henschel that has become Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH in 2000. The first Marder 1A3 was delivered to the Germany army in November 1989. The Marder 1A3 is the current standard IFV used by the German armed forces but it will be replaced by the new Puma IFV in the next few years.

The new modernized Marder featuring new passive armour package to provide protection against 30mm cannon used by the Russian BMP-2. The general layout of the Marder 1A3 IFV is very similar to the previous version.

There is some modifications of the internal layout of the turret with ammunition feed, newly designed and improved seats, a larger free space in the knee area, and an enlarged passage between the commander's and gunner's seats.

Main armament of the Marder 1A3 consists of one 20 mm Rheinmetall MK 20 Rh202 automatic cannon mounted externally which has an elevation of +65º, depression of -17º and 360º turret traverse. Second armament includes one 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun MG3 mounted to the right of the main armament. Two banks of three electrically operated 76 mm smoke grenade dischargers mounted between the coaxial machine gun and the gun.
