Pantsir-S is a Russian land-based self-propelled missile and gun system, designed to provide point air defense of military and civilian installations(including long range AD systems) from all modern and future means of air attack. It may also provide defence from land and sea threats. Pantsir-S is used to provide AD to the most important small-sized military and industrial installations, Army units and formations. This system was also designed to provide defense from massive air strikes with the application of precision weapons.

The system’s main distinctive feature lies in its ability to detect and destroy any airplane, helicopter, UAV, guided air bomb or ballistic missile just in several seconds.

It is worth mentioning that the Kamchatka-based AD units took up duty this summer with the S-400 Triumph systems, replacing the S-300 systems.

"Artillery units of the Eastern Military District have received a batch of 203-mm 2S7 Pion self-propelled artillery systems. The 2S7 Pion is the most formidable self-propelled gun in the world today," Gordeyev said.

The Pion’s service entry took place in 1975. The full-scale production of the baseline weapon and its variants had continued before 1990. The self-propelled gun was able to fire nuclear-tipped projectiles developed in 1977. Its chassis was derived from that of the T-80 tank.

The 2S7 also has the individual torsion bar-type suspension. Its combat weight is 45 tons, maximum road speed 50 km/h and endurance 675 km. The gun’s maximum firing range equals 37.4 km for high-explosive/fragmentation ammunition and 47.5 km for rocket-assisted projectiles. The Pion has a practical rate of fire of 1.5 rounds per min., an ammunition load of four rounds and a crew of seven.
