Description
The Pandur is a 6x6 armoured vehicle personnel carrier designed and manufactured by the Austrian Defence Company Steyr-Daimler-Puch now a subdivision of General Dynamics European Land Systems. The development of the Pandur 1 began in 1979 and the first vehicle was unveiled in 1985. The production of the Pandur was started in 1986. In 1994, the Austrian Army placed an order for 68 Pandur vehicles and the first of these were completed in December 1995 and production was completed late in 1996. In October 1996, the Kuwait National Guard placed an order with AV Technology International of the USA for the supply of 70 Pandur (6 × 6) light armoured vehicles in six variants with first production vehicles being completed in November 1997. In November 1998, the Belgian Army took delivery of the first of 54 Pandur APCs for use by the Para Commando Brigade. The order from Belgian army for 54 Pandur vehicles included 41 APCs (Armoured Personnel Carrier), five command post vehicles, four maintenance and recovery vehicles and four ambulance vehicles. Slovenia has also selected the Pandur as the standard 6x6 APC for its armed forces. The Pandur APC is now manufactured under licence in Slovenia by the local company of STO RAVNE under the name of Valuk. First deliveries were made to the Slovenian Army in 1999. These are similar to the Austrian Army vehicles but have a ramp at the rear. Late 1999, the US Army has ordered 50 Pandur, but only 12 vehicles were delivered. Recently, the Austrian army has upgraded pandur 1 with anew remotely weapon station armed with a 12.7mm machine gun. In March 2015, the Swiss Company RUAG has announced the upgrade of all Pandur 1 vehicles of the Belgian and Austrian army with mine-, IED- and ballistic protection kit.

Variants:
- Pandur with ADM: Steyr-Daimler-Puch has developed, as a private venture, the Automatic Drivetrain Management (ADM) system to improve the performance of its Pandur (6 × 6) Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) and variants, especially in off-road conditions.
- Amphibious Pandur: equipped with water-to-water cooling, closed air intake and electric bilge pumps.Mounted on either side at the rear of the hull is an integrated water jet, which is run from a power take-off, these give a maximum water speed of 11 km/h and the Pandur can turn through a full 360º in eight seconds
- Pandur Ambulance: has a higher raised rear compartment and its rear wheelbase (second to third axles), has been increased from 1.53 to 1.83 m for greater internal volume. Casualties can be carried in three different configurations, these are four stretcher patients, two stretcher and three sitting or six seated patients. A full range of medical equipment is carried.
- Pandur reconnaissance fire support vehicle: fitted with a two-man turret armed with a 90 mm gun, for example the Cockerill 90 mm LCTS turret system which is armed with the Mk 8 gun system.
- Pandur anti-tank guided missile carrier: armed with ATGMC/HOT and fitted with the Euromissile UTM 800 launcher.

Armament
The standard Pandur 1 6x6 APC is fitted with a one-man open-top turret armed with a 12.7mm machine gun. In 2015, the Austrian army has upgraded its fleet of Pandur 1 with a remote weapon station. The army of Kuwait has also Pandur 1 fitted with a Cockerill two-man turret armed with a Cockerill 90 mm gun and computerised fire-control system with day/night sights. Mounted on the right side of the hull, firing forwards, are two banks of three electrically operated smoke grenade launchers.
Design and protection
The standard Pandur 1 6x6 is designed to be used as personnel carrier with a crew of three, consisting of commander, driver and gunner, and six fully equipped troops being carried in the rear. The driver position is located at the front left of the hull with the engine at his right. The rear part of the hull is dedicated for the troops. The hull of the Pandur is made in all-welded steel armour that provides protection against penetration from 7.62 mm × 51 armour-piercing projectiles fired from a distance of 30 m all round (0 to +7º vertical) and over the frontal arc (-39 to +17º vertical and -30 to +30º horizontal). The vehicle can be upgrade with armour kit to increase protection against ballistic and mine threats.
Mobility
The Pandur 1 6x6 APC is motorized with Steyr WD 612.95 (WD 612.35) 6-cylinder turbocharged water-cooled diesel with air-intake cooling, developing 260 hp (285 hp at 2,500 rpm) at 2,400 rpm cooupled to an Allison Transmission MT-653 DR with 5-speed with torque converter and lock up clutch. The Pandur 1 uses a three axles independent suspension with power steering on the first and second axles. The suspension of the first and second wheel stations consists of an upper longitudinal control arm with a lower transverse control arm and coil springs. The rear wheel station consists of a trailing arm and torsion bar.
Accessories
Standard equipment of the Pandur 1 6x6 APC includes an automatic fire extinguishing system for the engine compartment and a heater. In option, the vehicle can be fitted with an NBC protection/NBC detection system, a fire suppression system for the crew compartment, an air conditioning system, a recovery winch and a land navigation system. Various types of passive night vision equipment can be provided, including thermal sights for the commander and gunner when the Pandur is fitted with a two-man turret. Mounted on the left side of the hull rear is the air conditioning system while on the right side of the hull is the recovery winch. The Pandur 1 has a central tyre-pressure regulation system, which allows the driver to adjust the tyre pressure to the type of ground being crossed at any given time. The tyre pressure can be changed while the vehicle is moving. All wheels of the Pandur are fitted with an emergency run-flat system allowing for a 50 km ride even with all tyres punctured.
