Description

The Iveco LMV (Light Multirole Vehicle) is a 4x4 tactical vehicle developed by Iveco, and in service with several countries. The Light Multipurpose Vehicle (LMV) was originally developed by the IVECO Defence Vehicles as a private venture with the first of 10 prototypes being completed in 2001. Within IVECO the LMV has the company designation of the M 65E19 WM 4 × 4. To reduce overall life-cycle costs, proven off-the-shelf subsystems were used in the design of the LMV wherever possible, for example, engine and transmission. According to IVECO, the LMV has been designed to meet the stringent demands of military operations at the same time as providing a high level of ride and crew comfort. Late in 2003, the Italian Army placed a contract for an initial batch of 60 LMVs, of which two were used for development and trial work with the remaining 58 going to units for user trials. These were supplied in armored and non-armored configurations Late in 2004 an order was placed for a further 1,150 vehicles for delivery over a five-year period with all of these vehicles being in an armored configuration. In Italian Army service, the vehicle is called the VTLM (Veicolo Tattico Leggero Multiruolo). Within the Italian Army, it is also referred to as the Lynx. The UK has ordered 401 of these vehicles to meet its requirement for a Command and Liaison Vehicle. The LMV is in service with Italy, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Norway, Spain, and the United Kingdom. The LMV is called VTLM Lince by the Italian military and Panther CLV in the United Kingdom. The LMV was deployed for combat operations in Afghanistan. In August 2019, the Netherlands has confirmed the purchase of 1,275 LMVs in five different variants. On March 17, 2023, the Belgium government announced the supply of 80 LMVs to Ukraine.

LMV variants:

- LMV Ambulance
- LMV Command Post
- LMV SF (Special Forces):
an open-top version of standard LMV especially designed for Special Forces
- LMV 2: is a modernized version of the previous model of LMV. The LMV 2 provides better performance, higher reliability, and increased crew comfort. One of the most important benefits is an increase of payload of some 40% to approximately 1.5 tonnes (800 kg for LMV 1), depending on the vehicle configuration.

Technical Data

Armament
The Iveco LMV can be fitted with a remote-controlled weapon station armed with weapons up to 12,7 mm in caliber. Larger weapons systems such as air-defense missiles, shelter, box-type or even pick-up style bodies can be mounted behind a smaller two-seat cab.
Design and protection
The layout of the LMV IVECO is standard with the engine at the front, the crew and troops area in the middle, and the cargo compartment at the rear. The rear part of the vehicle is separated from the crew section in case of a mine explosion under the vehicle's rear and contains a spare wheel, jerry cans, onboard tools and other equipment. The vehicle can carry four military personnel with a driver and commander at the front and two more soldiers at the rear. The LMV Iveco can be fitted with modular armor, who gives protection against any type of mine and ballistic threats, favoring crew protection versus vehicle integrity. The LMV is designed to provide the crew with the maximum possible safety against mines. The ground clearance has been maximized, moving away from the origin of the explosion. No heavy mechanical element has been installed under the crew cabin and the transfer case has been moved into the rear part of the vehicle. The high payload of the LMV can be exploited for installed add-on armor kits designed since the first design phase. The basic kit provides ballistic protection against light weapons fire, while the heavier kit can protect the crew from ambushes, including mines threat.
Mobility
The LMV IVECO utilizes a conventional C-section chassis but with longitudinal reinforcements and tubular cross-members to give the required torsional rigidity. At present two wheelbase lengths are available, the standard 3.2 m and the extended 3.5 m, these giving overall lengths of 4.704 and 5.504 m respectively. The LMV Iveco is motorized with a 140 KW(HP) power engine coupled to an automatic or a mechanical gearbox with 6 forward gears and 1 reverse. The vehicle can ford to a depth of 1.5 m with preparation. The LMV IVECI can run at a maximum road speed of 130 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km.
Accessories
Standard equipment of the LMV IVECO includes a cab heater, defrosting system, an auxiliary heater, an air conditioning system, and NRBC (Nuclear Radiological Biological Chemical) protection system. In option, the LMV can be equipped with a central tire pressure regulation system. This allows the driver to adjust the tire pressure to suit the terrain being crossed. A self-recovery winch can be mounted at the front of the vehicle. The cab is fitted with two front adjustable and suspended seats, plus three suspended seats at the rear. A winch is mounted to the front of the vehicle. The LMV vehicle has been designed with a compact profile that allows one vehicle to be carried inside a CH-47 helicopter, while a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules transport aircraft can carry two systems internally.
