The battlefield was never a safe place, but technology has increased the danger. A modern army division or air force wing has 10 times the combat power of its World War II equivalent. This increase is the result of changes in the physical characteristics of weapons. But in addition to increasing available fire power, technology produces qualitative changes in the relationships among air, land, and sea power.

The Russian airborne troops understand that they need a new philosophy regarding its acquisition of military equipment and armoured vehicles. Airborne troops must have more mobility and need wheeled armoured vehicle.

To response this new request, Russian Airborne troops have launched cooperation with the Defense Company "KAMAZ" to design and manufacture a new multirole modular 4x4 armoured vehicle.

The KAMAZ-53949 Typhoon-K was unveiled for the first time to the public during the defense exhibition KADEX-2014 in Kazakhstan.

The KAMAZ-53949 is able to carry a payload of 3,000 kg and provides a protection Level 3 Stanag 4569. The KAMAZ-53949 provides mine protection up to 8kg TNT for a blast under the bottom and any wheel.

The vehicle has a total weight around 14,000 kg and is motorized with 325 hp. engine coupled to 6-speed automatic transmission.

The Typhoon-K can be equipped with a remotely weapon station armed with a light or heavy machine gun up to 14.5 mm caliber.
