The first regiment of state-of-the-art anti-aircraft missile system S-500 will protect Moscow and the center of Russia, commander of the air defense and missile troops, Major-General Andrei Demin said. The development of Russia's formidable S-500 air defense system will be completed in 2015, and the system could be put in service with the Russian military as early as in 2017.
The S-500, a long-range air defense missile system, is expected to become the backbone of a unified aerospace defense system being formed in Russia.
"I am sure that after the development and tests, the first regimental group of S-500 will enter service for covering the center of Russia and Moscow," Demin told reporters after attending military drills on Ashuluk range ground.
Earlier, it was reported that the drills with the participation of air defense missile systems S-300 and S-400 were held within the framework of the scheduled large-scale tactical exercises combining air and missile defense forces on Ashuluk range ground in the Astrakhan region.
S-500 "Prometheus" is a Russian anti-aircraft missile system, which was developed by JSC Almaz-Antey as a new generation of anti-aircraft missile systems, in which it was is supposed to apply the principle of separate solution of tasks to destroy ballistic and aerodynamic targets.
