Amphibious light tank / anti-tank tracked armored vehicle - Russia

2S25M Sprut SDM1 light tank amphibious 125mm self propelled armored vehicle anti tank gun Russia 925 001

Description

The 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 is a modernized version of the 2S25 Sprut-SD self-propelled anti-tank gun designed and manufactured by the Russian defense Company Tractor Plants. The 2S25M was specially designed to be used by the Russian airborne troops as an anti-tank vehicle. The modernization of the 2S25 increases reliability and improves technical characteristics by unification with BMD-4M chassis components. According to a representative of Russian defense contractor Tractor Plants, the firepower of the 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 air-droppable self-propelled anti-tank gun is on par with that of the T-90MS main battle tank. In January 2016, it was announced that the delivery of six 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 self-propelled anti-tank guns (SPATG) for the Russian airborne troops was planned for 2017. In June 2016, the Russian Airborne Force conducted a range of field tests of the modified Sprut-SDM1 self-propelled antitank gun (SPATG), The 2S25M can conduct combat operations in conditions of highlands or mountains and various climatic zones including hot tropical climate. The 2S25M can be transported by military cargo aircraft and assault landing ships, it is air-droppable by parachute with the crew inside the vehicle. It can cross water obstacles without preparation at sea rough to force 3. It can embark on assault landing ships from water without assistance at the end of amphibious operations.

Technical Data

Armament
The 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 is fitted with a two-man turret armed with a 125 mm 2A75M smoothbore tank gun whose characteristics virtually match those of the 2A46M5 tank main armament. It fires all types of ammunition designed for the T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks. The 2S25M has the same firepower level of the T-90 main battle tank using the same ammunition with a high power-to-weight ratio. The turret is fully stabilized in elevation and traverse. The gun has an elevation of +17º and a depression of -5º. Turret traverse is a full 360º. The 2A75M’s ammunition load comprises 40 rounds, of which 22 are in the autoloader and 18 are stowed somewhere else in the vehicle. The organic ammo load consists of 20 blast-fragmentation and 14 APFSDS rounds and six ATGMs (the latter may be replaced with six HEAT rounds). The 2S25M gun can fire a modernized missile, a derivative of the Invar-M round. The precursor in the missile’s nose section punches through the ERA, including an integral one. With the upgraded Invar-M round in its weapons suite, the Sprut-SDM1 has radically advanced capabilities, e.g. the missile’s range is 2-2.5 times longer than that of the gun of any present-day tank, because tank-fired projectiles have a range of 2,000 m, while the AT guided missile’s reach is 5,000 m, according to Russian military experts. The second armament includes a 7.62 mm PKTM machine gun which is mounted coaxially with the main armament on the left side. A remotely controlled weapon station is mounted on the top left side of the turret which is armed with a 7.62mm PKTM machine gun. Three smoke grenade dischargers 902V Tucha are mounted on each side at the front of the turret. The Sprut-SDM1 is able to fire with the main gun during a river crossing or amphibious operations.
Design and protection
The layout of the 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 is similar to the previous version of the 2S25 with the crew compartment at the front, turret and fighting compartment in the center, and engine compartment at the rear. The driver is seated at the front of the hull in the center and has a single-piece hatch cover and three-day periscopes. The 2S25 uses some same components of the BMD-4M airborne IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicle) as the digital fire control system and engine. The front of 40º left and right of the 2S25M provides protection against the firing of small arms up to 12.7 mm and through the remainder of the vehicle against attack from 7.62 mm.
Mobility
The 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 is motorized with a UTD-29 multi-fuel four-stroke diesel engine with direct fuel injection and dry-sump, liquid-cooled, and naturally aspirated. The suspension on each side consists of seven single rubber-tired road wheels, an idler at the front, a drive sprocket at the rear, and six-track return rollers. The suspension is of the hydro-pneumatic type and allows the ground clearance to be adjusted by the driver from his seat between 100 and 500 mm in 6 to 7 seconds. The 2S25M can run at a maximum road speed of 70 km/h with a maximum cruising range of 500 km. The 2S25M is fully amphibious and propelled in the water at a maximum speed of 7 km/h thanks to two water jets situated on either side low down at the rear of the hull. Before entering the water a trim vane is erected at the front of the vehicle and the bilge pumps are switched on. The vehicle is able to negotiate 35% forward and 25% side slopes. It can cross a trench of 2.8 m width and a vertical obstacle of 0.8 m.
Accessories
Standard equipment of the 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 includes night vision equipment for the commander, gunner and driver and an NBC (Nuclear, Biological, Chemical) protection system. The 2S25M is fitted with an improved digital fire control system including the day/night gunner’s sight with a thermal imager and an auto-tracker. The up-to-date sensors ensure the allowance for the wind, the vehicle’s own speed, etc. The gunner has the Sosna-U day/night primary sight, optronic with independent stabilization of sighting line, integrated rangefinder, ballistic computer, and laser channel of guided-missile guidance. The gunner has also a PDT backup sight with day vision, optronic with independent stabilization of the sighting line in elevation with an integrated power source. The commander has a panoramic day and night vision sight model PKP with an independent stabilized sighting line with an integrated range finder and ballistic computer.
