The tank regiment will succeed a legendary large unit of the Great Patriotic War and strengthen the Western Military District’s 1st Guards Armored Army, the spokesman added.

"The regiment will receive the colors, decorations and honorifics of the 1st Guards Armored Brigade named after Marshal Katukov. The brigade was the most effective tank unit during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945," Muginov said.

The newly-formed regiment has received upgraded T-72B3 tanks, advanced reconnaissance, communications, air defense and engineer equipment, he added.

The T-72B3 is a development of the standard Russian-made T-72B series currently in service in the Russian army.

The main armament of the T-72B3 is a 125mm 2A46M-5 smoothbore gun fitted with a light-alloy thermal sleeve and a bore evacuator.

The T-72B3 is equipped with active protection system (APS) Arena-E designed to defeat threats such as the rocket propelled grenade and the anti-tank missile, including newer anti-tank missiles with longer ranges.
