Description

In 1982 the V-PVO introduced a fully mobile variant of the system, designated the S-300PS (P- PVO, S - Samochodnyy/Self-propelled), labeled by NATO the SA-10B. The S-300PS/SA-10B was a close technological equivalent to the MIM-104 in many respects, but was significantly more mobile, and offered a better low-altitude footprint due to the semi-mobile mast-mounted Tin Shield and Clam Shell systems. Growing US electronic combat and SEAD capabilities, in the EF-111A Raven and F-4G Weasel forces, were clearly considered a serious threat and this spurred the further evolution of the S-300PT system. The S-300 PS (first generation) with NATO denomination SA-10B (Grumble B), is a more mobile alternative of the basic version of the surface-to-air missile system S-300 PT, the principal difference resides, in the use of the chassis of a truck 8x8 MAZ-7910, on which the four launcher missile containers are mounted, contrary to S-300 PT which uses a tractor-drawn trailer. The S-300 PS is also capable of destroying ballistic missile targets and is regarded as one of the most potent anti-aircraft missile systems currently fielded Its radars have the ability to simultaneously track up to 100 targets while engaging up to 12. S-300 PS deployment time is five minutes. A typical battery S-300 PS group would include one 5P85S TEL, two 5P85D TEL/Transloaders, and one mobile 5N63S Flap Lid B radar. The 5P85S was a "smart" TEL equipped with the control logic and datalink hardware for the whole 5P85SD TEL group, the 5P85D being a "dumb" TEL under the control of the 5P85S. The 5P85S is identifiable thanks to the large equipment container behind the cabin; for the 5P85D this area is not enclosed and is used for cable or spare tire storage.

S-300 surface-to-air defense missile system variants:

- S-300 F: naval version of the S-300
- S-300 V: four missiles mounted to a tracked vehicle.
- S-300 PS: Four missiles mounted to a Maz-543 truck.
- S-300 PM: Four missiles mounted to a Kraz-260 truck.
- S-300 PM1: upgraded version of S-300 PM, new missile, and association with a new radar system
- S-300 PM22: upgraded version of S-300 PM1, higher range.
- S-300 PMU: export version of S-300 PS/PM
- S-300 PMU1: export version of S-300 PM1
- S-300 PMU2: export version of S-300 PM2

Technical Data

Missile Launcher
Each launcher (5P85S or 5P85D) carries four missile silos (one missile by silo) mounted to the back side of the chassis. During launching the silos are drawn in a vertical position, to the back side of the truck.
Missiles
Two improved variants of the 5V55 missile were introduced. The 50 nautical mile extended range 5V55KD was supplemented with the 5V55R, the latter using a Track Via Missile (TVM) semi-active seeker similar in concept to the MIM-104 Patriot seeker. The TVM system relays to the ground station radar data produced by the missile seeker, and offers better jam resistance and accuracy against a pure command link guidance package, especially as the missile nears the target.
Mobility
The missile system S-300 PS is mounted generally to the back side of Russian truck chassis 8x8 MAZ-7910.
Battery components
The S-300PS saw the 5N63 Flap Lid engagement radar and 5P85 TEL transplanted onto the high mobility 8x8 MAZ-7910 vehicle derived from the MAZ-543. The rehosted radar became the 5N63S Flap Lid B (Samochodnyy/Self-propelled). This permitted the engagement radar and TELs to set up for firing in 5 minutes, and rapidly scoot away after a missile shot to evade US Air Force Weasels. The improved 5N63S Flap Lid B radar had the capability to concurrently engage six targets, and guide two missiles against each target. The phased array beam steering angular range was extended to permit instantaneous coverage of a 90-degree sector, comparable to the SPY-1 Aegis radar.
