US Marines arrive in Australia for a six-month rotation
The first group of the 1,250 US Marines has begun arriving on 13 April in Darwin, Australia, as part of the Marine Rotational Force (MRF). They will remain in country for a period of six months. Their mission is to reassure allies in the region of the US commitment to stability and security.

According to Marine Corps Times, the majority of the Marines come from the 1st Battalion, 1st Marine, based at Camp Pendleton in California. Their new base will be at Robertson Barracks. Along with the ground troops, the MRF is also comprised of an aviation combat element with four UH-1Y Venom.

During the deployment, the US Marines will train in emergency and disaster response; will take part in various combat training and survival exercises; will provide community service and they may also deploy to nearby countries to take part in similar activities.

Based on an agreement between the two countries, the US would deploy 2,500 Marines on a rotational basis. Their total strength is expected to reach in the future depending on the operational requirements, the available budget and logistical support, and other similar issues.
