Both the city and the antiquities suffered severe damages since its occupation by the Islamic State in May 2015. It was recently liberated by the Syrian Army, which was supported by Russian aircraft.

Russian Defence Minister Sergey Shoigu made the announcement during a teleconference with senior officials of the Armed Forces. He mentioned that the hospital will be able to operate autonomously for 30 days and will have all the necessary equipment. Besides the medical support to the Russian forces deployed in Syria, it will also be available to the Syrian military and the local population.
