The two leaders met in Bucharest on Thursday 21 April, where they discussed bilateral, regional and international issues, including the security situation in the region. Petro Poroshenko said that the discussion involved security approaches in the Black Sea that would replace or supplement the existing ones. He suggested that the countries in the region could set up a joint Black Sea naval force operating under the NATO umbrella, as soon as the Alliance approves of this initiative.

He also said that he discussed with the Romanian President Klaus Johannis the possibility of setting up a trilateral brigade with the participation of Bulgaria. The idea is not new, since Kiev is already a contributing member of the Polish-Lithuanian-Ukrainian brigade and has so far accumulated an important experience out of it.

The two sides have also agreed for their Defence Ministries to sign on 6 May an agreement to develop military cooperation in the field of transportation. Moreover, they have decided to organize joint border patrols to fight against illegal trafficking of humans and goods. Finally, the two presidents agreed to resume the meetings of the bilateral military commissions after nine years.
