Possible bilateral cooperation between Krauss-Maffei Wegman and Romania about Leopard MBT
Romanian authorities will lay the foundations for a bilateral cooperation in the defense industry with the German armored fighting vehicles company Krauss-Maffei Germans Wegman. A working group has already been formed after a meeting between Sorin Encutescu, State Secretary of the Romanian Ministry of Economy, coordinator of the defense industry, and Thomas Fritzsch, regional sales director of Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW), according Romanian newspaper.

"The discussions focused on the possibility of bilateral cooperation in this field which is required for the completion of a national defense project or third-party beneficiary," say representatives of the Ministry of Economy.

"At the end of the meeting it was agreed for both the Romanian and the German parties to consider setting up a working group in order to find the best solutions for future collaboration in the interest of all parties," Economy Ministry officials said.

According Military Balance 2014, Romania has 437 Main Battle Tanks: 250 T-55, 42 TR-580 (T-55 turret fitted on a T-72 chassis), 91 TR-85 et 54 TR-85M1. None of them meet the NATO standards. Romania joined NATO on March 29, 2004.
