The President
of Afghanistan is the Commander-in-Chief of the Afghan
Armed Forces, with the authority to declare war or
a state of emergency. All armed forces proper are
under the Afghan National Army (ANA). The Afghan National
Army and the Afghan National Police are collectively
referred to as Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF).
The total active manpower is around 86,000 military
personnel. There is also a Para-military force with
82,000 police officers.
The Land Forces of the Afghan armed forces is around
50,000 soldiers with the structure:
- 7 regional corps with 7 HQ battalions, 16 infantry
brigades (each with 3 infantry battalions, 1 combat
support battalion, 1 combat service support battalion),
1 armoured mechanised brigade, 5 Commando battalions,
5 logistic depot battalions, 4 support helicopter
squadrons.
