FN Herstal is the Defense and Security branch of the Herstal Group.
Situated in Belgium since its creation the Herstal Group is also active in the civilian sector through its range of Hunting, Shooting and Outdoor products with the Browning and Winchester Firearms brands. The Herstal Group has almost 3,000 employees worldwide and registered a turnover of more than 820 million Euros in 2018.
FN Herstal is based near Liège in Belgium, with three fully owned subsidiaries: FN America (USA), FNH UK (UK) and Noptel (Finland).
From handguns to heavy machine guns, FN Herstal has been a world-leader in small arms design and manufacture for many decades. The success of the company’s early machine gun and pistol designs laid a solid foundation upon which it has developed a series of weapons to maintain its leading position in the small arms marketplace.
For many years, FN Herstal developed, designed and manufactured modern assault rifles, as the SCAR® family which is one of the latest generations of assault rifles in the current military and security market. The FN SCAR® family includes the FN SCAR®-L (5.56x45mm NATO) and FN SCAR®-H (7.62x51mm NATO) assault rifles, the FN SCAR®-SC subcompact in 5.56mm or .300 BLK, the FN SCAR®-H PR/TPR precision rifle in 7.62x51mm NATO. A 40mm grenade launcher can be quickly attached to the FN SCAR®-L or FN SCAR®-H to greatly increase firepower, or configured as a stand-alone launcher using a retractable buttstock assembly.
FN Herstal also offers a range of machine-gun options that cover tasks from light support weapon to fixed-platform heavy duties. The lightest of them is the FN MINIMI 5.56mm weapon, first produced in 1981. Later a 7.62mm version was introduced to complement the widely used FN MAG weapon. At the high end of the range are the FN M2HB-QCB and FN M3 family of .50-calibre guns.
FN Herstal has a legacy in ammunition design and manufacture that reaches back to 1898 when the first cartridge factory was established. Along the way, it has developed cartridges that have been adopted as ‘NATO standard’ and have become among the most prevalent in use around the world. Recent development includes the 5.56x45mm FN PERMAX™ and FN PROPASS™ cartridges and .50 cal FN ARIA™ Reduced Range, also available in tracer version.
To complement their offering in small-caliber weapons, FN Herstal has also developed an FN® e-novation product and service line. It includes the FN® FCU Mk3 fire control unit for 40mm LV/MV grenades; the FN® Ballistic Calculator which is a compact weapon-mounted range finder for any squad weapon; the FN® Expert marksmanship training system and an innovative and comprehensive solution for optimizing small arms management.
Airborne Weapon Solutions
In 1978 FN Herstal embarked on a new product line that would grow to be a huge success. Rather than just produce the weapons, the company began to integrate them on pintles, or in pods, for application to a wide range of aircraft and helicopters, military and security vehicles, and on naval vessels.
In the air domain, FN Herstal supplies a range of pintle- and pod-mounted systems. For use with both helicopters and fixed-wing light attack aircraft, the company developed a self-contained FN HMP pod. The self-contained unit is carried from NATO-standard 14-inch lugs and comes in a number of variants. All mount the FN M3P .50-calibre heavy machine gun as standard.
FN Herstal also provides a wide range of crew served weapon systems accepting the FN MAG® or FN® M3M machine gun.
Land and Sea Weapon Systems
The Belgian firearms manufacturer FN Herstal has launched in 2008 the development of a new family of remotely operated weapon station starting with the deFNder™ Light followed in 2010 by the deFNder™ Medium. Both integrate of its full range the combat-provenFN® machine guns including 5.56mm / 7.62 mm machine guns or FN® M2/FN® M3 12.7 mm heavy machine gun. A naval version, the Sea deFNder®, is also available.
