M113A1 Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) have a long and proud history in the Australian Army since they were first introduced in 1965. After nearly 45 years of service to the nation, three M113A1s, one of which saw service in Vietnam, had their last street patrol in East Timor before being cleaned in preparation for shipping back to Australia. The M113A1s have been an important part of Australia’s mission in East Timor since they were first used to secure the Dili area when INTERFET inserted in 1999. Since 2006 the APCs have been used to carry the Quick Response Force (QRF), made up of Australian and New Zealand infantry who were dispatched to deal with any outbreaks of civil unrest in the capital. The six M113A1s that have been in service in East Timor arrived with the International Stabilisation Force following the outbreak of violence in East Timor in 2006. After they return to Australia the vehicles will be converted into M113AS4s.

Textron Marine & Land Systems, an operating unit of Textron Systems, a Textron Inc. company, has been selected by the Colombian Ministry of Defense to produce and deliver 39 Armored Personnel Carriers (APC) ASV M1117 for the Colombian Army. The Colombian Army's initial requirement for armored wheeled vehicles with associated logistics support will be contracted through the U.S. Army Foreign Military Sales process. The total value of this procurement is $45.6 million.

The BMP-T is intended to destroy light armoured vehicles, but also main battle tanks with heavy armour.

Following the success with the first UAS ever to fly at the Paris Air Show in June 2009, Schiebel has now won a contract with the Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA). The CAMCOPTER S-100 will be leased for a selection of comprehensive experimental trials in France by the French Army at a military camp, during a military exercise, as well as two weeks of demanding trials at a non European location, and on behalf of the French Navy at a Navy base. The trials will take place during the first half of 2010. The goal of these trials is it to assess the advantages of VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing). In order to fulfill the DGA’s requirements, Schiebel has sub-contracted Thales Aeronautical Systems to assist them with the arrangement and organization of the flight and frequency permits. The main payload for these trials will be the Thales Optronics Agile 2 Electro Optical and Infra Red (EO/IR) sensor.

Eighteen LEMIR systems (Leurre Massique mécanique InfraRouge) are deployed in the Afghan theater with French forces operating as part of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). The LEMIR Device system is fitted to the wheeled armoured vehicle VAB in Afghanistan, the French Command and Support Battalion (BCS) carried out its first resupply convoy between Kabul and Nijrab, in the Kapisa valley, using the LEMIR device. LEMIR is a counter-IED (improvised explosive devices) and counter-mine device which will detonate explosive devices that are activated by pressure, trip-wire or heat sources. Particularly flexible, it comes in the form of kits with adjustable length and width to fit all types of vehicles, of foreign or French design. The kits are installed on the VAB and BUFFALO, which are distributed throughout the French area of operations in Afghanistan. There are three LEMIR for each Groupement Tactique Interarmes (GTIA, or combined battle group) within the Task Force La Fayette in the Kapisa and Surobi valleys. Six additional LEMIR are provided to the Operational Liaison Monitoring Teams deployed in the French area of responsibility, and three are held in reserve.

Oshkosh Corporation marked the handoff of the 1,000th MRAP All Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV) to the U.S. Armed Forces on Nov. 30 at a ceremony with military leadership at the company’s facilities in Oshkosh, Wis. Brig. Gen. Michael Brogan, commander of the Marine Corps Systems Command, and Lt. Col. Coll Haddon, M-ATV product manager for the MRAP Joint Program Office, were the keynote speakers at the event. Having exceeded the government’s delivery schedule for five consecutive months, Oshkosh is ramping up production to 1,000 vehicles per month in December and continuing at that level through April 2010. Since being awarded the production contract on June 30, 2009, Oshkosh has received four additional awards from the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command Life Cycle Management Command (TACOM LCMC) to supply a total of 6,219 M-ATVs. Oshkosh also has received orders for spare kits and to send its factory-trained field service representatives (FSR) to Afghanistan to provide training and maintenance support for the vehicles. The aggregate amount of the five awards is valued at $3.2 billion.

Jordan is negotiating the purchase of an additional $388 million package of Javelin anti-tank missiles. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress the 30 November 2009 of a possible Foreign Military Sale to Jordan of JAVELIN Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, Fly-to-Buy Missiles, JAVELIN Command Launch Units (CLUs) with Integrated Day/Thermal Sight and associated parts, equipment, training and logistical support for a complete package worth approximately $388 million. The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan has requested a possible sale of 1,808 JAVELIN Anti-Tank Guided Missiles, 18 Fly-to-Buy Missiles, 162 JAVELIN Command Launch Units (CLUs) with Integrated Day/Thermal Sight, containers, missile simulation rounds, enhanced basic skills trainer (EPBST), rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries, battery dischargers and chargers, and coolant units, support equipment, spare and repair parts, publications and technical data, U.S. Government and contractor engineering and logistics personnel services, and other related elements of logistics support. The estimated cost is $388 million.

The Russian land forces create a training center for the drones operators, announced to Monday in Moscow the chief of the department power station of the military formation of the Russian Armed forces Valeri Evnevitch. "The Land forces of Russian army plan to create the Training center of the specialists charged to control the drones at the time of military operations”, indicated the Evnevitch general. “The drones also took part in the exercises (Russo-Belorusses) Zapad 2009 (Occident 2009) which had proceeded in September in the presence of the president and Russian supreme leader of the armies” Dmitri Medvedev”, said the general.

As decided by Hervé Morin, Minister of Defense during the Oct. 12 meeting of the ministerial committee for defense investments (Comité Ministériel des Investissements de Défense, CMI), the French Army’s Central Directorate of Matériel (DCMAT), with the participation of the Directorate General of Armaments (DGA), on November 19 awarded the contract for the post-production support of the Leclerc main battle tank (SSPP XL) to Nexter Systems. The result of two years of preparation, this innovative contract marks a turning point for the support of the French Army’s 254 Leclerc tanks: it embodies the will of the Ministry of Defence to ensure the long term achievement of operational goals, while controlling support costs, as specified in the White Paper on defense and national security and the reform of the operational maintenance of army equipment. The contract also aims to create a partnership approach between the Army, DGA and Nexter Systems, in which the latter assumes overall responsibility for supporting the inventory, as well as the primary technical authority. This will be achieved in particular by Nexter’s greater involvement in maintenance activities, and by its assuming contractual commitments that contribute directly to achieving the objectives of fleet availability. The implementation of services for the initial phase will begin on 1 January 2010, for an annual amount of 90 million euros, which will be widely distributed within the national industrial base.

The Russian Armed Forces will conduct large-scale Vostok military exercises in Siberia and the country's Far East in 2010, the Defense Ministry said on 01 December 2009, according to RIA Novosti. The exercises will be part on the annual training cycle in the Russian military, aimed at improving combat readiness and interoperability of the various branches of the Armed Forces. "The main event of the combat training in 2010 will be the Vostok-2010 strategic exercises, which will involve units of the Siberian and the Far Eastern military districts, the Air Force, Airborne troops and the Pacific Fleet," the ministry said in a statement. So far this year, the military has conducted the Caucasus 2009, Zapad 2009 and Ladoga 2009 strategic exercises, and 15 brigade-level and 161 battalion-level drills. Russia holds Vostok strategic command-and-staff exercises every two years. More than 8,000 troops took part in Vostok-2008.

Oshkosh Corporation, Oshkosh, Wis., is being awarded a $61,038,188 fixed-price delivery order #0059 under previously awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract (M67854-06-D-5028). This delivery order is issued against exercised priced options for the purchase of 155 logistic vehicle system replacement production cargo vehicles. Work will be performed in Oshkosh, Wis., and work for this delivery order is expected to be completed by Dec. 30, 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

The South Korean K-21, the world’s strongest infantry tracked armoured fighting vehicle developed and produced with Korean technology, will be deployed to field sites for operation from the end of this month. Doosan DST held a ceremony to mark the first shipment of K-21 infantry combat armed vehicles, which have been mass produced for the first time, at its Changwon Plant. The event was attended by more than 100 people, including high-ranking military officers and defense suppliers. The K-21, whose development began in late 1999 in the hope of strengthening the Korean military’s combat capability, entered into mass production this year after the operation, evaluation, and testing of pilot products at field sites. The K-21 has been evaluated as superior to the M2A3 of the U.S. and the BMP-3 of Russia, which are regarded as the world’s strongest combat vehicles in this category, in terms of fire power, the capacity to manage battlefields, and mobility. Doosan DST plans to actively pursue the K-21’s export to the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Latin America by banking on its excellent performance and competitive price.

The Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Poutine required Monday at a meeting of governmental leaders and industry of armament to fill the public order envisaging to deliver to the army into 2010 ballistic missiles and satellites. “In 2010 the armed forces must receive more than 30 ballistic missiles based on ground and at sea, like 11 space units. This objective must be carried out unconditionally”, indicated M. Poutine. The Prime Minister pointed out that the public order of armaments, in rise in 2010, would be assembled to 1.175 billion roubles (27 billion euros).

Poland could send up to 1,000 additional troops to Afghanistan to boost its 2,000-strong military contingent in the country, the Polish Foreign Ministry said on Monday. The ministry has received a plan drafted by the Defense Ministry to increase the military contingent in Afghanistan. "There are likely to be less than 1,000 servicemen. A final decision will be announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk," Piotr Paszkowski said. A total of 15 Polish servicemen have been killed in Afghanistan, and over 100 injured since 2001. The U.S. has 68,000 troops in the country, and other NATO states have 45,000. General Stanley McChrystal, the commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), earlier asked U.S. President Barack Obama to authorize the deployment of up to 40,000 additional troops to fight the Taliban insurgency. The U.S. is also expected ask NATO countries to boost their contingents in Afghanistan, to fill the gap between the 34,000 the Pentagon expects Obama to send, and the 40,000 General McChrystal has requested.

As the Prague Daily Monitor reported on 29 November 2009, the Czech Defence Ministry launched an open tender for assault rifles with grenade launchers with an estimated value of CZK1.5 billion (€57.4 million / $86.4 million). The newly procured assault rifles are to replace ageing equipment of the Army after Czech Defence Minister Martin Bartak reported to the parliament in October that the military encountered problems with old arms. According to the daily, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) invited for offers to be placed by 18 December 2009 and plans to procure some 8,000 assault rifles along with 400 grenade launchers. Furthermore, the contract will include the purchase of 1,400 telescope sights with night vision adapters and laser pointers as well as spare parts and ammunition. The Czech MoD seeks to replace the ageing Sa vz.58 machine guns that the Army has been using since the 1950s. Thought is very much resembles the AK-47 Kalaschnikow it is a domestic development. However, both arms use the M43 7.62x39mm rounds. So far, press reports have only revealed the name of one arms manufacturer that will participate in the tender. The domestic manufacturer Ceska zbrojovka a.s. will reportedly offer its CZ S 805 which is convertible into a combat gun configuration, configuration of a light sub-machine gun or a light sniping rifle.
