Russian defense firm to mass-produce advanced 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 self-propelled antitank gun

MOSCOW, August 15. /TASS-DEFENSE/. The 2S25M Sprut-SDM1 self-propelled antitank gun will be equipped with a remote two-axis stabilized machine gun, Executive Director of Kurganmashzavod (KMZ, part of the High-Precision Systems Company within the Rostec state hi-tech corporation) Pyotr Tyukov told TASS.

“The weapon system has a number of advantages. The talk is about a 125mm tank gun capable of using all modern types of munitions and a remote two-axis stabilized machine-gun mount, which allows the commander to stay inside the vehicle to deliver effective fire from the halt and on the move, regardless of the main armament,” he said.

The 2S25M system is equipped with a 125mm 2A75 gun and is comparable to the T-90MS main battle tank in terms of firepower. The vehicle is primarily being developed for the Russian Airborne Force. Its ammunition load includes armor-piercing sub-caliber, high-explosive, high-explosive fragmentation shells and also remotely detonated munitions. The antitank gun has a firing range of 5 km (3.1 mi), a road speed of up to 70 km/h (43 mph) and a swimming speed of 10 km/h (6.2 mph). It has a three-strong crew.

The 2S25M self-propelled antitank gun has shown firepower comparable to that of the T-90 tank and proved to be as mobile as the BMD-4M airborne fighting vehicle during its tests, Executive Director of Kurganmashzavod (KMZ, part of the High-Precision Systems Company within the Rostec state hi-tech corporation) Pyotr Tyukov told TASS. “The tests have shown that the 2S25M self-propelled antitank gun is not inferior to the T-90 tank in terms of firepower and is as mobile as the BMD-4M airborne fighting vehicle both on land and afloat,” he said.

The digital fire control system of the 2S25M self-propelled antitank gun includes two main sights that allow searching for targets at any time of the day and one self-powered spare sight, Executive Director of Kurganmashzavod (KMZ, part of the High-Precision Systems Company within the Rostec state hi-tech corporation) Pyotr Tyukov told TASS: “Our self-propelled gun has been equipped with the latest digital fire control system… The main elements of the digital fire control system are the Sosna-U PNM gunner’s combined sight and the PKP commander’s panoramic sight, which are made in the form of a self-contained multi-channel sighting system that allows the gunner and the commander to effectively employ weapons due to wide search capabilities at any time of the day (in the daytime, in limited visibility conditions, and at night), high precision of two-axis line-of-sight stabilization. The PKP commander’s panoramic sight allows firing all types of munitions, including guided missiles,” Tyukov said.

Both sights are equipped with automatic target acquisition and tracking systems. In addition, the vehicle has an optical-electronic spare sight that can be used in case of damage to the main ones. It has a vertically stabilized field of view and is self-powered. “Assessing the fire control system of the 2S25M self-propelled antitank gun in terms of its capabilities and the range of tasks it is able to accomplish, it is possible to say without false modesty that several versions of tank fire control systems corresponding to the world level or even surpassing it have already been developed in Russia,” Tyukov added.

Russian defense firm to mass-produce advanced 2S25M self-propelled antitank gun

Kurganmashzavod (part of the High-Precision Systems Company within the Rostec state tech corporation) is carrying out work to launch the batch production of the advanced 125mm self-propelled antitank gun following the completion of its state trials, Company Executive Director Pyotr Tyukov told TASS.

“The state trials of the upgraded 125mm 2S25 self-propelled antitank gun were completed in the first half of 2022 as planned. Work is currently underway to adjust the design documentation for approving it at the inter-agency commission and assigning it the O1 designation. After that, a decision will be made on the commissioning of the weapon with the Russian army,” he said. “The enterprise is now preparing manufacturing facilities for the batch production of this weapon,” Tyukov said. “It is also working on technological processes, choosing and producing fittings and holding talks with suppliers,” he added.

The upgraded antitank gun showed high amphibious properties during its state tests in the Black Sea. In addition, the 2S25M demonstrated the possibility of its transportation by large amphibious assault ships and the capabilities of its weapons suite afloat, the executive director said.

Russia’s 2S25M self-propelled antitank gun may spark interest in India and the Middle East

Russia’s advanced 125mm self-propelled antitank gun may spark the interest of customers from India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East, Executive Director of Kurganmashzavod (KMZ, part of the High-Precision Systems Company within the Rostec state tech corporation) Pyotr Tyukov told TASS.

“The upgraded 125mm 2S25 self-propelled antitank gun has been developed for the Russian Airborne Force but it will undoubtedly evoke the interest of foreign customers,” Tyukov said. “We mainly focus on the markets of India, Southeast Asia and the Middle East. It is the competence of [Russia’s state arms exporter] Rosoboronexport to assess the need for the system and the potential of military-technical cooperation in this field,” he added.
