Russia will launch modernization of T-72B series main battle tanks named T-72B4 or T-72B3M.
Russia will launch the modernization of T-72 series main battle tanks (MBT) under the name of T-72B4 / T-72B3M with a first contract to upgrade 154 MBTs T-72B series (T-72B, T-72B1 and T-72BA). Under this first contract agreement, a total of 32 tanks could be modernized before the end of 2016.

The T-72B3 is a development of the standard Russian-made T-72B series currently in service in the Russian army. The T-72B3 has significantly improved its combat characteristics with more fire power, protection, mobility and command controllability.

The T-72B4 also referred as T-72B3M is motorized with a new diesel engine V2F developing 1,130 hp offering more mobility in all-terrain conditions. The tank is now fitted with a new automatic gear and motion control system with voice informer critical modes of operation of the units.

The T-72B4 is fitted with a new armour package which enhances the protection of the tank.

A very important new features of the tank is the new panoramic sight mounted in the center of the turret. The tank commander now has the ability to detect and engage targets at the level of the world's best models of arms, day and night, in bad weather.

In addition, the T-72B4 is armed with advanced 2A46M5 gun that has a better performance than the gun mounted on the previous T-72B series.

All the T-72 series MBT are fitted with a an unditching beam mounted at the rear of the hull but for the T-72B4 model it is mounted to the rear right side of the hull.
