An Eastern Military District unit operating Smerch multiple-launch rocket systems and stationed in the Sakhalin Region has conducted a live firing exercise at the Kapustin Yar Missile Range in the Astrakhan Region, having destroyed simulated enemy command posts and combat vehicles, the military district’s spokesman, Alexander Gordeyev, told TASS on Tuesday.

"The Smerch MLRS crews eliminated practice targets simulating command posts and bunched-up military vehicles. The Smerches fired 300-mm rocket at the maximum range. Their crews got excellent grades after the targets had been examined once the firing was over," Gordeyev said.

He noted that in addition to the live firing exercise, the Smerches practiced marching, crossing a contaminated area and repulsing an attack of the notional enemy’s commandos.

The BM-30 Smerch is a heavy multiple rocket launcher designed to counter tactical missile systems, army aviation at staging airstrips, as well as rocket, artillery and mortar battalions and batteries, command post, and manpower concentration areas. A Smerch unit is typically composed of six launchers and six transloaders. Now it is used by Russian, Ukraine, Belarus, Kuwait, and United Arab Emirates, Indian and Chinese armed forces.
