Scientific advances need real-world testing to demonstrate their worth, particularly when defence and security issues are at stake. As information technologies advance and provide soldiers with increasing amounts of data to process, the risk of cognitive overload likewise becomes greater.

During the Viet Bac Exhibition Fair 2019 defense show that was held in Thai Nguyen from the 20 to 26 December 2019 for 75th foundation anniversary of the People's Army of Vietnam, Vietnamese ministry of defense has presented latest military equipment and combat vehicles which are now in service with the Vietnamese People’s Army (VPA).

The first batch of the latest ASM assault rifles will be delivered to the 24th brigade deployed in Novosibirsk. ASM is an upgraded Val rifle. It is nearly silent from a distance of several meters and the bullet will pierce any armored vest. Experts believe the rifles are irreplaceable in commando operations.

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency, being aware of the advances made by Russia and China in hypersonic missiles technology, is developing a space sensor system to intercept hypersonic missiles in the air. This technology, currently in phase IIa, is called Hypersonic Ballistic Missile Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS), as reported by Sarah Lavallee in Finance 2nd.

Russian-made 9K333 Verba (SA-25) MAN-Portable Air Defense Systems (MANPADS) will defend long-range radars against drone threats. They have to down cruise missiles and drones. The Syrian combat showed that drones pose a major threat to radars. The adversary engages them to destroy radars and strip air defense of the viewing ability. Experts believe MANPADS will reinforce the defense of radars which has been insufficient until recently, the Izvestia daily writes.

BAE Systems has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop new cyber tools designed to help prevent vulnerabilities in electronic files that can lead to cyberattacks. Development of these tools will be part of DARPA's Safe Documents (SafeDocs) program, which aims to more effectively identify and reject malicious data in a variety of electronic formats.

One conundrum to providing a realistic and immersive virtual training experience for soldiers is portraying computer-generated people and objects behind real things, and doing so in real-time from multiple perspectives as actors and objects move around. Patti Bielling explains on U.S. Army’s website.

BAE Systems has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop software that will enable semi-autonomous multi-domain mission planning. The technology will be designed for military operators to leverage battlespace resources from across various domains, such as space, air, land, and sea, for more effective, efficient missions.
