German H&K G28 M110A1 new marksman rifle for U.S. army infantry

The U.S. army has selected the new G28 as marksman rifle for infantry units. The U.S. Army has chosen the German G28 rifle, named in the U.S. Army as M110A1, to allow infantry squads to hit targets at greater ranges. The Heckler and Koch G28 designated marksman rifle will give infantrymen a weapon guaranteed to penetrate enemy body armor at longer ranges than existing M4 carbines.

The G28 is a military version of the civilian semi automatic competition rifle MR308. Deployed in the established 7.62 x 51 calibre, the “Designated Marksman Rifle” (DMR) ensures accuracy of 1.5 MOA whilst enabling a full night fighting capability.

The M110A1 is a lightweight variant of the combat proven 7.62mm G28 in use by the German Army. The G28 is designed and manufactured by the German Company Heckler & Koch. The contract could include the purchase of 3,643 rifles will be worth up to $44.5 million. The German company Heckler and Koch will also provide spare parts and support for the U.S. Army.

The layout of the G28 is similar to the Heckler and Koch 416 infantry automatic assault rifle used by the U.S. Marine Corps chambered the 7.62x51 cartridge. This weapon designated the M110A1 in US. Army use features a 16.5-inch barrel, a 20-round translucent magazine, and weighs 15 lbs.

The M110A1 has a 16.3 inch barrel that is chrome lined with a fluted chamber that aids in reliability when used with a suppressor. The barrel is produced by Heckler & Koch's famous cold hammer forging process. This manufacturing process uses the highest quality steel, producing a barrel that ensures superior accuracy, even after firing thousands of rounds.

The M110A1 version has ambidextrous controls, an improved trigger, 3-20x50 PMII Ultra Short Schmidt & Bender optic, and uses an OSS suppressor. The M110A1 uses the same 10- and 20-round translucent polymer magazines made for the G28, HK417, and MR 7.62 mm rifles. And the HK M110A1 can be fitted with a wide variety of accessories and options.

The HK M110A1 departs from the traditional black weapon color and uses a tan-brown color scheme analogous to "flat dark earth" — the finish also has special low detection properties and is camouflaged for many environments.

A designated marksman rifle (DMR) is the weapon used by infantries in the designated marksman (DM) role. Although the "sniper" and the "designated marksman" are distinguished by mission and deployment role, rather than by operational range, the DM's role generally fills the range gap between a regular infantryman and a sniper.
