"During the exercise, the units practiced assuming the state of high alert, conducting marches while countering enemy commandos, setting up fortifications, establishing communications and deploying obstacles," the spokesman said. "Unmanned aerial vehicles interacting with air defense units were used for the first time to ensure security of the vehicular convoys," he added.

"During the tactical exercise, the UAVs detected a simulated enemy’s ambush and quickly transmitted its coordinates to the command post of an artillery battalion," Gordeyev said. Then, crews of 2S5 Giatsint-S self-propelled guns destroyed the ambush at a distance of 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) using high-explosive/fragmentation projectiles.

The exercise involved more than 300 servicemen and about 50 items of military hardware, including BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles, T-72B3 tanks, 2S5 Giatsint-S self-propelled guns, 2S12A Sani mortars, Osa (NATO reporting name: SA-8 Gecko) air defense missile systems, Shilka self-propelled antiaircraft missile/gun systems and Eleron-10 unmanned aerial vehicles.
