On the top of the turret is mounted the firing and laser guide system of the missile system which can be controlled from inside the tank.

Main battle tank is now able to response against all range of aerial threats flying as attack helicopter of armed drones. The Type 98 armed with MANPADS missile system is designed to provide air defence of land forces in all kinds of combat operations, as well as that of installations.

With this type of weapon, the Type 98 can detect and engage fixed and rotary-wing aircraft (including helicopters) and other low-altitude air targets from stationary position, short halts or on the move, as well as ground/surface targets.

Man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) are surface-to-air missiles that can be fired by an individual or a small team of people against aircraft. These weapon systems often are described as shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles. The Type 98 is one the latest main battle tank which is in service with the Chinese armed forces.

The chassis of the Type 98 is very similar in appearance to that of the Russian T-72 MBTs with the driver's compartment at the front, fighting compartment and turret in the centre and power pack at the rear. The Type 98 is armed with a 125 mm smoothbore gun which is fitted with a thermal sleeve and fume extractor. The Type 98 MBT can fire a laser-guided missile from its 125 mm/50 calibre smoothbore gun.

Russia has also modernized its ZSU-23-4 self-propelled anti-aircraft gun system with Igla 9K38 man-portable surface-to-air missile under the denomination of ZSU-23-4M4. The vehicle mount a set of control equipment with two Strelets-23 launch modules, designed to carry and launch four Igla-type missiles, as well as an IFF transponder complying with customer's existing standards.

Polish army uses also a modernized version of ZSU-34-4 armed with MANPADS systems.

The ZSU-23-4MP "Biala" includes a new digital optical targeting system and 4 Grom surface-to-air missile launchers (MANPADS). The Biala is armed with AZP-23 automatic cannons which can fire modern ammunition and have an increased effective anti-aircraft range to about 3.5 km, 0.5–1 km more than the original ZSU-23-4. The Grom missiles' maximum range is about 5.5 km.

The Grom is a man-portable air-defence system produced in Poland very similar to the Russian-made MANPADS SA-18 Grouse.
