Technical data
Armament
The basic version of the SandCat Oshkosh is not armed, but if necessary the SandCat Oshkosh can be fitted with a remote controlled weapon station armed with weapons up to 12,7 mm in calibre. The gunner position can be protected with an armour kit.
Protection
The SandCatTM protected multi-role vehicle comes with a standard armor kit. Kit A is a base level metal composite unit which reduces weight and enables lower fuel consumption. Kit B is an optional upgrade. It’s a composite-based armor solution mounted on the base metal composite (Kit A) for added ballistic protection if the environment calls for it. It can be easily and quickly assembled out in the field. The cabin structure of the SandCat vehicle is a specially designed superstructure of armor panels. The armor panels are equipped with an overlap system to maintain the ballistic integrity of the panels and prevent penetration of shrapnel, fragments or small arms ammunition hits. It has three layers: The external layer is constructed of ceramic segments, sized and shaped to offer optimal ballistic performance. These are then packed into panels which make up the armor’s foundation. The unique structure allows for coverage of three-dimensional curved shapes of the vehicle chassis design. The other two layers are the vehicle’s wall and a spall liner. This metal composite armor system offers extra protection while being much lighter and less costly than an equivalent metal layer.
Propulsion
The Oshkosh SandCat is built on a commercial Ford 550 chassis, allowing for rapid manufacturing and customisation of the armour system to meet the needs of the mission. The SandCat is motorised with a Ford 6.4l diesel engine that generates 325hp at 3,000rpm, coupled to an Allison 2000 series automatic transmission and has a two-speed electronic transfer case.
Accessories
SandCat Oshkosh is fitted with advance suppression systems for the seats that minimise the impact of the blast on the crew. The seats can be suspended in such a manner to that can prevent the contact between crew and vehicle belly during an impact. An additional SandCat safety option is a five-zone fire-suppression system, which provides immediate protection to all forms of hazardous combustions in the crew compartment, engine compartment, fuel cells, wheel wells and the vehicle's exterior. The SandCat Oshkosh can be easily transported in a C-130 aeroplane and up, or CH-47, MH-47 and CH-53 helicopters.
