CERV
(Clandestine Extended Range Vehicle) is a lightweight, diesel-electric
hybrid prototype with a top speed of 130 km/h. Designed for reconnaissance,
targeting and rescue missions, CERV also has silent run capability and
is one of the Army’s “greenest” vehicles. CERV was
developed in partnership with California-based Quantum Technologies.
Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide Inc. is developing and shipping
diesel hybrid vehicles to the U.S. Army's Tank Automotive Research,
Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) National Automotive Center
(NAC), with funding support through the U.S. Special Operations Command
(USSOCOM), and project administration through Alion. The objective of
this program is to develop a second-generation high-performance light-duty
off-road hybrid electric vehicle based on the results and feedback from
the U.S. Army's testing and evaluation of the Aggressor. In December
2009, this vehicle received flight certification on-board the Osprey
V-22, and is currently the only hybrid drive vehicle to attain this
certification. Pre-production prototypes are being developed and built
for testing and evaluation by selected commands to assess mission suitability,
supportability, performance objectives, and guidance on final vehicle
configuration. The initial target mission would be related to special
operations-type missions involving reconnaissance, surveillance, targeting,
search and rescue, and also assist with field rescue operations.
CERV is up-fitted with a unique weapons ring mount armed with
a 12.7 mm machine gun that Quantum designed to enable higher
fire power for this high performance, versatile platform.
Design
and protection
The CERV
is entirely unarmored, and thus offers little protection from
small arms fire. The driver and passengers sit side by side
in front, with the gunner sitting in an elevated rear-central
seat in front of engine. The gunner's seat can spin around
to operate the machine gun.
Mobility
The
CERV design incorporates Quantum Q-Force, which is a new proprietary,
advanced all-wheel-drive diesel hybrid electric powertrain.
Quantum designed a unique purpose-built light-weight chassis,
integrated the Q-Force diesel hybrid electric powertrain, performed
a series of vehicle performance and safety tests and successfully
built a total of six (6) hybrid vehicles as part of this program.
This unique vehicle has a torque rating that exceeds 5,000 (2,267
kg) foot-pounds, can maintain a speed of 80 miles per hour (130
km/h), and ascend 60 percent grades. The Q-Force hybrid powertrain
is capable of reducing fuel consumption by up to 25 percent
compared with a conventional vehicle, helping to significantly
reduce the carbon footprint
Accessories
The
CERV incorporates the latest technology to improve weight trade
off and battery capability, both in materials and in software
management, to further increase performance and range. The CERV
will also meet size requirements to be air-transported on AFSOC’s
CV-22. Vehicle will carry up to 4 personnel. A large cargo platform
is fitted at the rear of the vehicle, just behind the seat passengers.
The CERV is equipped in standard with radio and computer mounts.
