The
Caiman MTV from BAE Systems is a heavily armored, high mobility MRAP
vehicle designed to meet the tactical mission requirements in Afghanistan
and the variable environments of today’s and tomorrow’s
operations. The Caiman MTV is designed and manufactured by the International
Defense Company BAE Systems. By combining the Caiman’s proven
crew and cargo capsule with an improved chassis that leverages readily
available, commercial off the shelf (COTS) technology, the Caiman MTV
is the perfect balance of interior capacity, tactical mobility and survivability
required for troop transport, command and control and medical units.
The Caiman MTV is 95 percent commonality with tactical wheeled vehicle
National Stock Numbers already fielded in support of Operation Enduring
Freedom means parts are available in theater. At the upcoming AUSA Winter
event taking place in Ft. Lauderdale , FL February 2010, BAE Systems
is introducing the Caiman Multi-Theater Vehicle (MTV) - a new configuration
of the combat-proven Caiman Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle,
implementing lessons learned from Iraq in a platform designed to operate
effectively in Afghanistan. BAE Systems first demonstrated the vehicle
to Army leaders on January 26 at Michigan Proving Grounds. The vehicle’s
second demonstration occurred February 10 during the Nevada Automotive
Test Center (NATC) Vehicle Systems Demonstration Technology Rodeo in
Carson City, Nevada. Thee 01 September 2010, Texas-BAE Systems has been
awarded a $629 million contract from the U.S. Mine Resistant Ambush
Protected (MRAP) Joint Program Office (JPO) to upgrade 1,700 Caiman
MRAP vehicles. The upgraded vehicle, called the Caiman Multi-Terrain
Vehicle (MTV), integrates a refurbished and improved armored capsule
from an existing Caiman with a new high-power automotive power train,
chassis and independent suspension. These enhancements will provide
greater levels of mobility and survivability necessary for challenging
and varied environments and enemy threats. |

| Armament |
| The
Caiman MTV can be fitted with armored glass turret, armed with
a 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun. The Caiman MTV is also ready
to be equipped with a remote controlled weapon station armed
with weapons up to 12.7mm calibre or an 40 mm automatic grenade
launcher.

| Design
and protection |
| The
protection of the Caiman MTV armoured vehicle is MRAP level.
The Caiman MTV combines the right balance of armor, weight and
mobility to withstand the larger IEDs encountered in Afghanistan,
as well as explosively formed penetrators, rocket-propelled
grenades and other significant threats. The Caiman MTV achieves
greater survivability through an enhanced monolithic floor,
a concentrically-formed C-channel frame and best-in-class blast
absorbing seats and fire suppression systems. The monolithic
floor plate, employed on the Caiman MTV, eliminates floor separation
during an IED blast comparable to the MRAP Capability Development
Document (CDD) objective requirement.
|
| Mobility |
The
cost-effective Caiman MTV features an improved lateral stability,
a robust independent suspension, and an upgraded temperature
control system to navigate Afghanistan’s extreme temperature
changes and harsh terrain. The Caiman MTV uses a 6 x 6 chassis,
with two wheels at the front and four wheels at the rear. The
Caiman MTV is motorised with Caterpillar C9 Heavy Duty Diesel
engine, 6-Cylinder, Electronic Controlled, Fuel-Injected Turbocharged
and Aftercooled, EPA Certified. The Caterpillar C9 engine is
coupled to a Caterpillar CX28 automatic transmission with six
speeds.

| Accessories |
| The
vehicle’s enhanced monolithic floor, concentrically formed
C-channel frame, blast-absorbing seats and the latest fire-suppression
systems improve survivability. The new Caiman configuration
can be delivered either as a new vehicle or chassis upgrade.
The Caiman MTV can ford to a maximum depth of 915 mm without
preparation.
