The MPT-76 is a 7.62mm NATO modular assault rifle designed by Kalekalip and produced by the Turkish Defense Company MKEK to replace the Turkish army's Heckler & Koch G3 battle rifles. The MPT-76 was designed for robust high altitude, all weather combat, capable of functioning in extreme hot and cold weather. The development of the MPT-76 started in 2007 with a first delivery to the Turkish army in May 2014 for evaluation. Serial production began in 2015. The initial phase of the project will see a total of 35,014 MPT-76's being produced in two tranches. The first tranche of the initial phase, consisting of 20,000 rifles was contracted to state-owned company Machines and Chemical Industries Board (MKEK) in June 2015. The second tranche, consisting of 15,014 rifles, was contracted with local company Kalekalip in December 2015. In January 2017, Machines and Chemical Industries Board (MKEK) delivered the first 500 serially-produced MPT-76 battle rifles to the Turkish Land Forces Command (TLFC). The rifles delivered on 11 January were the first batch from a 2015 deal which will see the production of around 35,000 MPT-76s for the Turkish Army, Navy and the Gendarmerie General Command.

| Design |

The design of the Turkish-made MPT-76 assault rifle is based on the AR-10 and the external layout seems very similar to the German HK417. It is a gas operated, select-fire weapon. It uses short stroke gas piston, located above the barrel, and AR-10/AR-15 style rotary bolt, bolt carrier and return spring system. The cocking handle is located at the end of the receiver as the M16 with ejection port on the right side. A carrying handle is mounted on the top of the receiver, there is an ambidextrous safety/fire selector controls with three positions and magazine release.

| Ammunition |

The first version of the MPT-76 was chambered for the 5.56mm caliber ammunition, but the Turkish army has decided to stay with 7.62x51 NATO round for its next generation of standard assault rifle. It fires now the 7.62x51mm NATO rounds using 20-round box magazines, made from translucent polymer. It is a select-fire rifle, although its caliber makes full automatic fire of limited use. The cyclic rate of fire is 650 rpm. The MPT-76 will be produced in three barrel lengths, with the longest one for use in the designated marksman role.

| Accessories |

The MPT-76's front sight is mounted on the gas block and features folding base. Integral Picatinny rail on top of the receiver can hosts aperture-type rear sight (fully adjustable for range and windage), as well as quick-detachable carrying handle with “see-through” channel for standard iron sights plus its own set of iron sights for short-range applications (with U-shaped notch rear sight), built into the top of the handle. Carrying handle can be easily replaced with any type of red-dot, telescope or night sight with appropriate mountings. Additional Picatinny rails on the forend permit mounting of various accessories. The MPT-76 is also fitted with a telescoping, adjustable shoulder stock. A knife-bayonet may be attached for the barrel, if required. At the front of the weapon there is also a vertical fore-grip integrated with a strong and stable bipod.
