The
S-300PMU-2 Favorit NATO designation SA-20B gargoyle
B , introduced in 1997, is an upgrade to the S-300PMU-1
with range extended once again to 195 km with the
introduction of the 48N6E2 missile. system is apparently
capable against not just short range ballistic missiles,
but now also medium range tactical ballistic missiles.
The combat capabilities of the new system were first
tested on August 10, 1995, on the Kapustin Yar testing
range in an encounter with Scud ballistic missiles.
Several 48N6E2 missiles were launched to intercept
Scuds. During the interception, the explosion of
the air defense missiles' military load detonated
the high-explosive charge of the ballistic missiles.
Russian scientists and specialists were the first
in the world to achieve so remarkable a result.
The S-300PMU2 Favorit was show for the first time
during the Air Show Exhibtion MAKS edition 1997,
in Moscow. Like the S-300PMU-1, 12 launcher units
can be controlled, with any mix of 5P85SE2
self propelled and 5P85TE2
trailer launchers. The S-300 PMU2 FAVORIT air defence
missile system is designed for defense of vital
facilities of the state and its armed forces against
mass strikes by modem and future aircraft, strategic
cruise missiles, tactical and theatre ballistic
missiles, and other air attack weapons over a full
range of altitudes and speeds in heavy ECM environments.
The S-300PMU2 Favorit can engage targets flying
from 10 m to 27 km above the surface at a speed
of up to 10,000 km/h. It is claimed that it has
a kill ratio ranging from 0.8 to 0.93 against aircraft
and from 0.8 to 0.98 against Tomahawk-class cruise
missiles. The S-300PMU2 can engage up to 6 targets
simultaneously while providing guidance for up to
12 missiles - two missiles per target ensuring target
kill. The S-300PMU2 Favorit
can use the launcher unit 5P85TE
and 5P85SE.

Four
paired missiles container-launchers are
mounted to the rear of the semi-trailer
5P85TE
or truck chassis 5P85SE.
In firing position, the missiles containers
are placed at the vertical to the rear side
of the trailer. |

| The
S-300PMU2 Favorit system can used the 48N6E2
air defense missiles and also the 48N6E,
5V55K, and 5V55R missiles which are currently
used in S-300PMU1 systems. The 48N6E2 air
defense guided missile was developed by
the Fakel Machine-Building Design Bureau,
which has for decades been the main producer
of missiles for the air defense systems
of Russia's Army and Navy. The development
of the new missile, which began in the early
1990s, required numerous calculations and
tests, during which the missile demonstrated
its capability to intercept targets at a
range of 200 kilometers and the required
efficiency in destroying various kinds of
targets. The missile system includes all
the components of the S-300PMU1 system,
among them transport and launch canisters,
launcher and all ground servicing facilities.
Other innovations used in the 48N6E2 missile
include the use of fundamentally new guidance
algorithms, more advantageous flight trajectories
and new military loads. The development
of the missile proceeded in several directions
simultaneously and lasted several years.
Fakel specialists selected the prototype
which showed overwhelming advantages over
others both in ground and flight tests.

| Truck |
The
S-300 PMU2 launcher unit semi trailer based
5P85TE
series is usually towed by a 6x6 KrAZ-260
tractor. The S-300PMU2 Favorit autonomous
launcher unit 5P85SE
uses the chassis of the 8x8 truck MAZ-7910.
S-300PMU2 Favorit systems exported to China
have been supplied with the latest 5P85TE2
semi-trailer TELs, towed by BAZ-64022 6
x 6 tractors.
|
| Command
and control vehicles |
The
S300PMU2 Favorit system comprises the 83M6E2
command post and up to 12 launcher unit
S-300PMU2 5P85SE
or 5P85TE
air defense missile systems each carrying
four 48N6E2 or the S-300PMU1's 48N6E missiles.
The command post consists of the 54K6E2
battle management center and the 64N6E2
acquisition radar, with a maximum detection
range of 300 kilometers, can be integrated
into the S-300 SAM system providing improved
target acquisition capability. The Favorit's
new command post has the capability to control
S-300PMU / SA-10, S-300PMU1 / SA-20 batteries,
and also S-200VE / SA-5 Gammon batteries,
relaying coordinates and commands to the
5N62VE Square Pair guidance and illumination
radar. Each air defense missile system includes
the 30N6E2 multifunctional illumination
and guidance radar and up to 12 5P85SE
(5P85TE)
launchers. An option for S-300PMU2 Favorit,
cited by two Russian manufacturers is the
new LEMZ 96L6 Cheese Board early warning
and acquisition radar, a planar array design
with electronic beam steering in elevation
and mechanical steering in azimuth. It is
intended as a replacement for the Tin Shield
and Clam Shell. The 96L6/96L6E is available
in semi-mobile towed versions, a semi-mobile
mast mounted version using variants of the
40V6M/MD, and a fully mobile version on
an 8x8 MZKT-7930 vehicle, based on the MAZ-543M
chassis. The system has an interface for
digital data transmission directly to a
30N6E/E1/E2 Flap Lid, using cabled links
to the S-300PMU/PMU1 and optical fibre cables
or microwave links to the S-300PMU2. Deployment
and stow time is 5 minutes for the mobile
variant, and 30 to 120 minutes for the semi-mobile
and mast mounted variants respectively.
