information |
The ZPU-2 is a russian made anti-aircraft 14.5 mm
twin guns. The ZPU-2 was introduced in 1949 and
is a twin version of the ZPU-1
basic Soviet 14.5 mm machine gun. The late production
model ZPU-2 is lighter and lower, has narrower mudguards
and a lighter single tow bar. In the firing position
the wheels are raised clear off the ground but not
removed. The ZPU-2 is no longer in front-line service
with Russia as it has been replaced by the similar
23 mm ZU-23-2.

| Design |
|
The ZPU-2 uses two 14.5 mm Vladimirova KPV
(Krubnokalibernyj Pulemet Vladimirova) heavy
machine gun, which has a quick-change barrel,
mounted on a wheeled chassis. In firing
position, the wheels are removed and the
weapon rests on a three-point platform,
each point having a screw jack for levelling.

| Ammunition |

The ZPU-2 14.5 mm twin guns can fired the
following fixed ammunition:
- API (BS 41) projectile weighing 64.4 g,
with a muzzle velocity of 1,000 m/s, which
will penetrate 32 mm of conventional steel
armour at an incidence of 0º at a range
of 500 m
- API-T (BZT) projectile weighing 59.56
g
- I-T (ZP) projectile weighing 59.68 g.
The ZPU-1 14.5 mm twin guns has an effective
slant range of 1,402 m, effective limit
at +45º elevation is 975 m while effective
altitude limit at +65º is 1,280 m.

| Mobility |
The twin ZPU-2 has appeared on two different
two-wheeled carriages. The earlier model
has larger fenders and a double tubular
tow bar. In firing position the crew removes
the wheels, and the weapon rests on a three-point
platform. The later model, which is lighter
in weight, has smaller fenders, a tighter
single tow bar, and a tower silhouette.
When in firing position the wheels are raised,
but not removed.

| Accessories |
Two
ammunition boxes are mounted at the front
of the wheeled chassis, one under each gun.
Each ammunition boxes can carried 1,200
rounds of 14.5 mm. The ZPU-2 is equipped
with a single optical sight.
