Vietnam has selected Israeli Rafael Spyder as new short-range air defense missile system.

The Vietnamese commander of Air Defense Forces, Lieutenant-General Le Duy Vinh, has announced that the Israeli Spyder combined to the Russian-made S-300PMU1 and the radar 36D6 will be the backbone of air defense for the Vietnamese armed forces.
 

The Spyder is an air defense missile system designed and manufactured by the Israeli Company Rafael. The system is available in two variants, the Spyder-SR short-range air defense missile system and Spyder-MR medium-range air defense missile system.

The SPYDER-SR is a combat-proven, quick reaction, low level surface-to-air missile system designed to effectively counter attacks by aircraft, helicopters UAVs stand-off weapons and precision guided munitions. SPYDER-SR provides excellent protection of valuable assets, as well as first-class defense for forces located in the combat area.

The Spyder-SR has the capacity to intercept aerial threats from a range of 1 to 20km and an altitude between 20 m to 9,000 m. The SPYDER system incorporates RAFAEL's most advanced, proven performance air-to-air missiles – the Derby active radar (RF) missile and Python-5, a dual waveband Imaging Infra Red (IIR) missile.

The whole system includes the SPYDER's truck-mounted Missile Firing Units (MFU) are equipped with both IIR and RF missiles. The truck-mounted Command and Control Unit (CCU) comprises the Elta EL/M 2106 ATAR 3D surveillance radar.
