Starstreak air defense missile system now included in South African Army assets
 
South African Army Chief, Lieutenant General Vusi Masondo, yesterday officially took the Starstreak ground-based air defence missile system into the landward forces inventory. The handover took place at 10th Anti-Aircraft Regiment headquarters at Diskobolos, Kimberley as is part of the Army’s drive to rejuvenate its hardware, alluded to by Masondo last month when he met the media.

Lockheed Martin to deliver THAAD anti-ballistic missile launchers to U.S. Missile Defense Agency
 
The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) recently awarded Lockheed Martin a $124.6 million fixed-price contract for the manufacture and delivery of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) ground components. The contract provides for the delivery of U.S. government THAAD launchers, support equipment, fire control and communication spares, and launcher spares.

The Government of Qatar has selected Lockheed Martin’s PAC-3 Missile, becoming the newest international customer for the program. The initial contract is for missile and command launch system production. “The PAC-3 Missile will provide the Qatar Air Force with proven, reliable performance with unmatched hit-to-kill lethality,” said Scott Arnold, vice president of PAC-3 programs at Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control.

India plans to be missile-import free by 2022
 
Indian Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) plans to make the country "missile import free" by 2022, the defence research agency has told the Prime Minister's Office. "Our target is to make India missile-import free by the year 2022. This means that we need not import any missile in terms of air-to-ground, surface-to-air or the air-to-air missiles," DRDO chief Avinash Chander told PTI.

The US Army will launch two extensive gear tests in the coming months in two very different locales: the humid tropics of Hawaii and the harsh Alaskan landscape. The tests are part of the Soldier Enhancement Program (SEP), which allows the Army to try out commercially available gear quickly, without having to waste time or money starting from scratch, explained Col. Tim Wallace, head of SEP.

Alcoa manufactures new hull to increase combat vehicles protection
 
Alcoa, a global leader in lightweight, high-performance metals, has produced the world’s largest single-piece forged aluminum hull for combat vehicles to improve troop protection as part of a joint Alcoa-US Army initiative launched last year. Alcoa manufactured the single-piece part, which was co-designed by Alcoa and the US Army Research Laboratory, with the goal of replacing today’s assembled hulls.
