Washington says the war games are designed to act as a deterrent after Tuesdays shelling, the worst assault on South Korea since the end of the Korean War in 1953. The North-Korean government, supported by China, regards these military exercises as a provocation, and launches a message to the United States and South Korea, by indicating possible new attacks if its territory is violated.

This crisis began following the bombardments from the South Korean island from Yeonpyeong, Tuesday 23 November 2010, which caused the death of four people. These shows of force between the two countries could degenerate into a real conflict. According to military experts, the artillery North-Korean could easily reach the Seoul capital. In the case of a war between the two countries, the official ones of the Pentagon stated that it would take months to gain the war at the cost of million victims, of which of course most of civilians.

Another threat of the North Korea consists of the possible use of weapons of mass destruction, chemical or nuclear. Not many information’s are available on the real military capacities of the North Korea.
