U.S. President Donald Trump has signed the treaty allowing Montenegro to join NATO.
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, signed the treaty allowing Montenegro to join NATO. All current NATO members will also have to approve Montenegro's membership. With Montenegro, NATO would increase to 29 member countries with first expansion in eight years.

In December 2015, NATO Foreign Ministers decided to invite Montenegro to start accession talks to become the 29th member of the Alliance. The decision to invite Montenegro was taken during a meeting of the North Atlantic Council at the level of Foreign Ministers. Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Igor Lukšic and Defence Minister, Professor Milica Pejanovic-Ðurišic were invited to join the meeting after the decision was taken.

In the second half of 2014, Macedonian army troops were members of the EU Battlegroup.

The armed forces of Montenegro consists of an army, navy and air force. There has been no conscription in Montenegro, it's a fully professional army.

The Defense System of Montenegro is maintained under democratic and civil control. Basic elements of the defense system are Parliament, Government, the Security and Defense Council, Ministry of Defense, and Armed Forces of Montenegro.

The armed forces of Montenegro consist of 1,950 military personnel by the end of 2015 with a defense budget of around €43 million. A Strategic Defense Review document calls for the defense budget to increase progressively up to €76.5 million in 2023.

The Land forces had a total of 875 soldiers at the end of 2015. The Land Forces does not have a central command, but operate as independent units including two infantry battalion, mountain company, military police company, fire support company, engineer company, signal platoon, NBC defense platoon, intelligence and reconnaissance company and honor guard. subordinated to the Chief of General Staff.

The main military equipment of the Montenegro armed forces includes M-94 Plamen-S 128mm rocket launcher vehicles, D-30J 122mm towed howitzers, BOV VP M86 4x4 armoured vehicle, RCV Survivor armoured vehicles, and BOV 1 POLO M-83 anti-tank missile launcher vehicles.
