The Buk missile system is a family of medium-range surface-to-air defense missile systems mounted on a wheeled or tracked armoured vehicle developed by the Russian Defense Industry.

The Buk missile system can be deployed against tactical and strategic aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, tactical ballistic and aircraft missiles, guided bombs, and other aerodynamic aircraft in heavy enemy counter fire and radio jamming conditions. It can also be used to destroy water and ground surface contrast targets. The missile system offers superior defence capability in combat operations.

First generation Buk-M1 (NATO Code SA-11 Gadfly) is mounted on a tracked chassis that carries a radar and a launcher with four missiles. The Buk-M1 can engage six separate targets simultaneously with a maximum range of 28 km. The radar fitted to each SA-11 Gadfly is referred to as the 'Fire Dome' by NATO, it is a monopulse type radar and can begin tracking at the missile's maximum range (32 km/20 mi) and can track aircraft flying at between 15,000 and 22,000 m (50,000 to 72,000 ft) altitudes

The Buk-M2E (NATO code SA-17) missile system can perform multiple missions with greater mobility and can simultaneously engage a maximum of 24 targets.

The latest version, the Buk-M3 is able to engage 36 targets simultaneously. It will feature advanced electronic components.
