Russian
tactical missiles SS-21 Scarab Totchka-U temporarily deployed
in South Ossetia.

A
division of operational tactical missiles Totchka-U (SS-21
Scarab NATO code name) was temporarily deployed in South
Ossetia within the framework of military exercises, declared
05 March 2011 to RIA Novosti the Russian vice-minister of
the Foreign affairs Grigori Karassine.

“The
Totchka-U missiles systems were deployed on the territory
of South Ossetia in order to enable them to take part in
the exercises of our military base, this deployment is temporary”,
indicated the vice-minister, without however specifying
the date of their withdrawal.
The diplomat as announced
that in the beginning of May, Russia would subject a report
to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe
(OSCE) on manpower of the Russian army present in South
Ossetia and Abkhazia.
The Russian troops are deployed
in South Ossetia accordance with a bilateral intergovernmental
agreement. The Russian military base is equipped with 41
tanks and 151 armoured vehicles. The number of soldiers
is limited to 4.000 people, but it can be modified where
necessary.
Totchka-U are tactical missiles
with solid fuel with a range of 120 kilometres. They can
be equipped with nuclear warheads, with fragmentation or
others. They are able to reach targets such as aerodromes,
military bases, radar tracking stations, and fuel deposits. |
