The Special Operations Group (GEO) of the Spanish National Police has acquired new Heckler & Kock HK417 rifles, according to Spanish Media source. The weapons will be in the 7.62x56mm calibre. The decision for the procurement was based on the lessons learned from the terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, where terrorists were equipped with large calibres and bulletproof jackets.

The unit has acquired a total of 50 rifles under a EUR155,855 deal. It is highly possible that other similar units of the police force will procure similar weapons. Through this type of weapons, the police force will increase its capabilities in neutralizing targets with the use of greater stopping power.
