China is on the way to reform and to create a new strategic development of the defense industry.
China has set up an advisory institute for the reform and strategic development of the defense industry, the State Administration of Science, said the Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND). The advisory institute, formally named the Strategic Committee of Science, Technology and Industry Development for National Defense, will mainly carry out research on the strategic, comprehensive and cutting-edge topics mattering national security and long-term development of the nation.

The newly established think tank has absorbed a lot of senior experts from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering, the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Finance and the PLA General Armaments Department as well as universities.

According to SASTIND Director Xu Dazhe, who is also chairperson of the committee, China has made great progress in defense-related science, technology and industry, but there is still room for improvement to meet the needs of safeguarding national security, expanding national interests and consolidating China's position as a big country. More efforts should be made by China to catch up with the world's cutting-edge level of the defense-related technologies and industries, he added.

"The founding of the committee is aimed to gather opinions and advice from leaders and experts in relevant military and civilian departments and units , and get external intellectual support for the strategic development and technological innovation of China's defense industry," said Xu Dazhe.
