| Russian Army to receive Buk and Tor surface-to-air defense missile systems in 2016 | |||

Air defense units of Russia’s Army will receive two brigade sets of Buk (NATO reporting name: SA-17 Grizzly) surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems and four battalion sets of Tor (SA-15 Gauntlet) SAM systems before the yearend, Air Defense Force Commander Alexander Leonov said.

"This year, we will receive two brigade sets of Buk surface-to-air missile systems and four sets of Tor air defense missile systems," Leonov said.
According to the commander, air defense units have already received two battalion sets of Tor surface-to-air missile systems in accordance with the contract. The Tor short-range air defense missile system is designed to destroy planes, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, rockets and missiles at medium, low and extremely low altitudes. The first Tor air defense missile system was made operational in 1986. The modern Tor-M2 air defense missile system can eliminate targets flying at a speed of 700 m/s at a distance of 12 kilometers (7.4 miles) and an altitude of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). It was reported earlier that Russia’s Almaz-Antey Corporation was planning to deliver three battalion sets of Buk-M2 surface-to-air missile systems to Russian air defense units in 2016. Last year, the corporation delivered the same number of Buk-M2 surface-to-air missile systems. The Buk-M2 medium-range air defense missile system was developed in 1988 but its serial production started 15 years later. |
