Two thirds of the Russian territory is protected by army air defence units.
The Russian army troops of unified defence aerospace strategic command protect two thirds of the Russian territory, announced Friday, 22 July, 2011, to Mojaïsk, near Moscow, the commander of the troops Valeri Ivanov.

“We protect two thirds of the country territory, every day some 800 people protect the city of Moscow”, declared the general to the journalists. The main mission of the troops consists of defending the main industrial areas of the country, according to him.

In 2015, the Russian army troops will be equipped with new ground-to-air defence missiles S-500 and new fighters aircraft. They are military equipment of last generation”, added the general.

The new Russian unified air and space defence system will be set up in Russia before December 1st, 2011 in accordance with a decision of Russian president Dmitri Medvedev. Created on the basis of special command charged to protect the sky from Moscow, the new troops will belong to a single Russian aerospace defense system. They will protect more than 140 administrative buildings, industrial and energy works, transport infrastructure and nuclear plants.
