IDEX 2021: JAIS NIMR combat-proven Mine Resistant Ambush Protected MRAP vehicle made in UAE

At IDEX 2021, NIMR EDGE displays its JAIS combat-proven wheeled armored in the category of MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicle available in 4x4 and 6x6 configurations fully designed and developed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by the UAE-based company NIMR, a subdivision of EDGE, a cluster of defense and security industries.

The JAIS is in service with the United Arab Emirates armed forces. It has already been deployed in war zones and has shown its ability to save the life of soldiers thanks to its design and its high level of protection. It is an MRAP vehicle (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) that provides ballistic protection up to STANAG 4569 Level 4 (14.5×114mm AP / B32 at 200 meters with 911 m/s) and mine protection STANAG 4569 up to Level 4A/4B (10 kg of mine blast explosion under the wheels (4a) and floor (4b). The crew survivability is centered around a combat-proven "crew citadel" protection system that is very efficient against mines, IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices), and ballistic threats. To increase the ballistic and mine protection, the vehicle can be equipped with additional armor plates according to the mission requirements.

The JAIS has been designed to offer a modular armored vehicle able to be configured for different types of missions using the same platform. The design of the vehicle is very unique and offers more internal space and payload compared to other vehicles of the same class.

The layout of the JAIS is divided into three main compartments with the driver and commander positions located at the front of the hull, the engine on the left side of the hull, and the troop's compartment at the rear. The JAIS 4x4 has a crew of two and can accommodate 5 infantrymen while the 6x6 version has the ability to carry 9 fully geared military personnel. The 4x4 and the 6x6 versions offer the same design with 90% of commonality.

The JAIS 4x4 provides an excellent balance between firepower, survivability, mobility, and cost needed for modern conventional and asymmetric operations. The vehicle can be configured as a reconnaissance, patrol, utility, and ambulance vehicle.

The JAIS 4x4 has a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of 21,000 kg with a maximum payload of 3,200 kg. It has a length of 5,98 m, an overall width of 27.9 m, and a height of 2.63 m. The vehicle is powered by a Caterpillar diesel engine developing 450 hp coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The powerpack is mounted on the left side of the hull rather than the traditional front or rear mounting. It can reach 105 km with a maximum road range of 700 km.

JAIS 4x4 and 6x6 are equipped with a double-wishbone independent suspension that offers high mobility in all-terrain conditions. Both vehicles can negotiate a gradient of 60%, climb a vertical obstacle of 600 mm and cross a trench of 900 mm. The vehicle also has a 900 mm fording water capability.

The roof of the JAIS 4x4 and 6x6 can be fitted with a range of weapon systems including one- or two-man light and medium turrets armed with weapons up to 30mm caliber. Both vehicles can also be equipped with a remotely operated weapon station.

The JAIS in 6x6 configuration incorporates significant internal volume, with a payload capacity of 7,500 kg. The vehicle is designed for multi-role applications and multiple configurations. The vehicle can be fitted with a multitude of weapon systems and mission equipment.

The JAIS 6x6 is motorized with a 600 hp Caterpillar diesel engine coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission generating a maximum torque of 1,900 Nm. It can reach 105 km/h, with a maximum cruising range of 700 km.

Standard equipment of JAIS 4x4 and 6x6 MRAPs includes a power management system, run-flat tires system, and a central tire inflation system. In option, both vehicles can be fitted with a range of onboard military equipment including Battlefield Management System (BMS), C4I (command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence) System, night/day vision, SAS (Situational Awareness System), and a display monitor.
