IDEF 2017: MKE adds new MPT-55 and MPT-55K to assault rifles family
MKE added a new member at its MPT family of assault rifle, the Turkish company announced at IDEF 2017 International Defence Industry Fair in Instanbul, Turkey. The MPT-55 “National Infantry Rifle” and its short barrel variant, the MPT-55K, are the 5.56 mm variant of the the MPT-76 assault rifle.

The MPT-55 is an infantry rifle operating with gas operated rotating bolt system serving in all kinds of terrain and weather conditions, battle environment, day and night. The MPT-55 is designed and produced by Turkish engineers with the own resources of MKE in accordance with the needs of Turkish Armed Forces.

This 5.56x45 mm caliber assault rifle is declined in two variants, a long barrel (MPT-55) and a short barrel (MPT-55K). The shortest version barrel has a length of 279.4 m and a total weight of 3 kg. In its long barrel variant, the rifle barrel has a length of 368.5 mm and a weight of 3.3 kg. Both versions have a barrel life of 12,000 rounds.

The MPT-55 has two modes of fire: semi-automatic and fully automatic, for a rate of fire of approximately 850 rounds/min.

For the MPT55/K, MKE designed a multi-position retractable buttstock with 7 stages, providing comfortable shooting.

The rifle features a plastic composite magazine with 30 cartridges and a universal Picatinny rail on which any accesory can be mounted, including sights, laser aimers, pistol grips, slings, etc. Magazine ejecting latch, mechanism latch and safety catch are double-sided for both left and right use. The MPT-55 can perfectly work with M-4 magazines.

Upon request of the Command of Turkish Land Forces, the new 5.56x45 mm infantry rifle design works started in July 2015. Both MPT-55 and MPT-55K were successfully subjected to 30 tests with NATO standards. In August 2016, “Product Qualification Certificate” approved by the Ministry of National Defense for MPT-55/K was obtained.
