Design
The new RS556 looks like the American-made AR-15 assault rifle, but is the further development of the Steyr STM 556. The main components of this assault rifle are made from aluminum. Featuring an adjustable short-stroke gas piston system and rotating bolt, the gas-operated RS556 is based on the tried-and-tested Steyr Mannlicher AUG. A special breech system with an emergency operation feature ensures that the weapon always functions reliably even in extreme operating conditions, e.g. in severely hot and cold environments. The RS556 is fitted with a gas regulator behind the front sight base with four positions allowing adjustment of the gas system in response to the use conditions. The cocking handle is located at the rear of the receiver, above the buttstock as the M16 assault rifle, and does not reciprocate when gun is fired. The RS556 is fully ambidextrous with fire selector, magazine catch, and bolt catch on both sides of the weapon. The upper part of the receiver is fitted with an with integral telescopic magnification sight as a primary sighting equipment, similar to the Steyr AUG assault rifle. As the M16/AR15 assault rifle family, the RS556 includes the "Forward Assist" button mounted on the right side of the receiver to ensure ensuring that the bolt is locked. The forward assist button can be struck or pushed, in order to ensure that the extractor is clipped around the rim of the casing. It is commonly incorporated into standard loading procedure to prepare a firearm for firing, or to close the bolt when the firearm is excessively dirty. With a 16" barrel (406 mm) and a fully loaded, 30-round magazine, the RS556 weighs around 4.2 kilograms, just over 9 pounds.
Ammunition
The RS556 modular assault rifle is chambered for the 5.56mm NATO ammunition but its is planned to offer the weapon in other calibers as 7.62x35 mm, .300 Whisper, and 7.62x39 mm. It uses NATO standard 30 rounds transparent polymer magazine. The magazine catch is located on each side of the weapon for right and left handed shooters.
Accessories
The adjustable-length light-weight stock clicks into seven different positions, meaning that operators can adjust the RS556 to match their individual equipment profile in optimum fashion. The RS556 features several standard and optional NATO accessory rails with receiver systems designed in accordance with MIL-STD-1913, STANAG 2324 and STANAG 4694. This means that the weapon can be fitted with various optics and night observation devices or laser light modules. A 40mm grenade launcher can also be mounted on the new assault rifle. The RS556 is fitted with Picatinny rail above and below the handguard and receiver, but optional accessory rails can be located on the handguard sides. The forend of the barrel is capped by a muzzle brake.
